The Office Review: The Pros and Con of Sex
Michael Scott can always make me laugh. The overall concept of an episode of The Office, along the rest of the cast? They can be hit or miss. This week's episode, "Sex Ed," was a miss.
Michael contracted Herpes, which branched the episode into story A and story B, neither of which had me jumping for joy. In story A, Michael and Dwight went roaming around Scranton to tell his old flames they might have the STD. Not one of the face-to-face encounters was funny. Michael had a couple good one-liners in there, but the meetings themselves left a lot to be desired.
Michael's phone conversation with Holly, on the other hand, was classic. It was exactly why I loved when Amy Ryan was on the show, and it's exactly why I want her to come back before Steve Carrell leaves at the end of this season.
Holly's ability to go joke-to-joke with Michael's insanity makes me laugh every time. There was no change to that here, as she kept going with the joke about the car accident and the nuns, until it, like the nuns, finally died.
Story B was even less interesting this week. Andy Bernard, probably again because of his love for Erin, decided to lecture the rest of Dunder Mifflin on sex and sexually transmitted diseases. Nothing about this idea was funny, and very little about the execution worked. Andy seems to work much better when he's the smaller part of the story, not leading it. Even last week, when he was the star of the play, he was feeding off Michael in the crowd. Here he was moving the thing along, and it really didn't work.
But the Michael aspect of the episode might have been the first in many the many steps of saying goodbye to Carrell.
We got to remember all of the good times we witnessed with Michael and his women. Oh, and also the bad times. What will be next for Michael, before we really start to figure out how he will be leaving Dunder Mifflin Scranton?
Ponder that question and then review the best Office quotes from the half hour below:
Carol: Did you have a doctor check it out?
Michael: I'm between specialists right now. | permalink
Andy: Can anyone else name a consequence of sex?
Kevin: It feels unbelievable. | permalink
Holly: Michael, you cried at that tag line for a movie you made up.
Michael: He had no arms or legs. He couldn't see, hear or speak. This is how he led a nation. | permalink
Donna: Michael, I didn't think I'd hear from you. How have you been?
Michael: I have a disease, of which there is no known cure. It has been sexually transmitted to me. I can't even say it. H-I-R-P-E-E-S. | permalink
Dwight: I left him all the tools he needs. This is do or die. If he chooses correctly, he will conquer the hornets.
Andy: And if he doesn't?
Dwight: He'll die.
Everyone: What? Beg your pardon?
Dwight: When did the phrase "Do or die" become so corrupted? | permalink
