Legacies Season 2 Episode 5 Review: Screw Endgame

at .

Legacies has been the lighter of the three series set in The Vampire Diaries Universe.

What Legacies Season 2 Episode 5 did was zero in on the lighthearted storylines, while also increasing the emotional ramifications for the characters.

In short, it felt like one of the lighter episodes of The Vampire Diaries, and I wouldn't mind if it continued traveling this route for seasons to come.

Welcome to the 1980s - Legacies

While Josie's world was crashing down around her, her twin sister got stuck in a video game. It oozed fun as the characters were in fresh and exciting scenarios.

The monster of the week coming with a 1980s' vibe was a shock and the theme complemented by the decade dance at the Salvatore School.

MG: Hey, hey!
Kaleb: What?
MG: Woah, woah, woah!
Kaleb: Can you see him?
Kaleb: All I see is a dude who can't respect boundaries.
Sebastian: I told you, no one else can see me.
[Sebastian slaps MG.]
MG: Boy!
Kaleb: MG, you're tripping.
MG: I know, I know, I know, but Lizzie, she met this new vampire.
Kaleb: Oh, yeah, Sebastian.
MG: Yeah.
Kaleb: She's been flapping her gums about him all over school.
MG: He isn't real, so I thought Lizzie was losing it, but now I am seeing him, so either I'm hallucinating, or...
[Sebastian flicks MG's ear.]
MG: Would you stop touching me?

The 80s are making a comeback thanks to the small screen, and I'm here for every single minute of it.

Hope's relationship with Lizzie was strained on Legacies Season 1, so I appreciated that Lizzie was the one to remember our mighty little tribrid.

Hope Pleads with Lizzie - Legacies Season 2 Episode 5

Jenny Boyd and Danielle Rose Russel handled all of the emotional scenes very well. Being stuck in a labyrinth allowed Lizzie and Hope to get each other up to speed on what was going on.

It didn't feel convoluted. Instead, it was an interesting way to go about things. The show is excelling by not brushing Hope's sacrifice under the rug.

Kaleb: Hey buddy. Ask him what he wants.
MG: What he wants is to find his body. He says he's been desiccated in a box somewhere. He's a little vague on specifics.
Sebastian: I'm vague because, as aforementioned, I am desiccated in a box.
MG: I'm a pacifist, but if you touch my hair again, we will throw hands.

It was typical of Hope to want to stay in the labyrinth to allow Lizzie to return to their world. Hope has a heart of gold and would sacrifice herself in a heartbeat for her loved ones.

We already witnessed as much on Legacies Season 1 Episode 16 when Hope gave up her very existence for them. For someone who has had so much pain in her life, she is all about saving people that matter to her.

Who's This Woman? - Legacies Season 2 Episode 5

Lizzie not leaving the labyrinth without her reaffirmed that Lizzie is not this selfish teenager we've been led to believe she is. She has some issues, but she's working on them and trying to be a better person.

What more could we ask of her?

The keeper escaping the labyrinth with them was the big surprise, but she was not going to survive very long in a world more dangerous than when she left it.

Lizzie: Hope Andrea Mikaelson.
Hope: What?
Lizzie: It's official, I remember everything. When I woke up from that spell Josie blasted me with, you popped into my messed up brain like an acid flashback.
Hope: How? You are literally the only person on the planet who knows that I exist.

Vardemus smiling at her in the bar felt awkward, but I can't be the only one that let out an audible gasp when we learned that Clarke has been posing as the headmaster all along.

He's a crafty individual, so it makes sense, but still, bravo to the writers of "Screw Endgame," because they delivered with that reveal.

Happiness Begins - Legacies Season 2 Episode 5

It raises a lot of questions about what Clarke and Malivore plan to do with Josie. Are they just scheming to drive a wedge between her and everyone else, or do they need her for one of their dark plans?

It's a shame that Alaric pushed himself to bury the hatchet with Vardemus in the end because it means the villains have free reign to continue doing whatever it is they do.

Poor Alaric. He was so sure that Kaleb was the third vote to fire him from the school that he never thought to consider that his daughter was the one to do the deed.

Alaric confronting Josie was one of the most emotional scenes of the entire series. He was confused and wanted to know if his daughter was really against him.

Alaric Listens to Josie - Legacies Season 2 Episode 1

It made sense when she said Alaric served his purpose. He wanted to create a safe haven for his daughters, but he wouldn't always be around thanks to him being a human.

Josie figured her father could move on and find an epic love and live the rest of his days happily knowing that his daughters were safe. Are they safe, though?

Lizzie: We have bigger drama. Josie and Landon are having sex tonight.
Hope: What?
Lizzie: There's a decade dance.
Hope: Okay, well that doesn't mean...
Lizzie: She asked me to find an excuse to stay with my dad.

The merge is still hanging over everyone like a dark cloud, and with Chris Wood signed on to reprise the role of wicked Kai Parker, there are going to be some tough times ahead.

Josie is also struggling to make sense of what Landon is doing. She was prepared to have sex with him for the first time, but things kept getting in the way of it.

Landon and Josie Dress Up - Legacies Season 2 Episode 5

Landon rushing around the school, trying to find a condom made for some comical scenes, but there had to be more. Josie finding the diary was an unpredictable development that successfully fueled her fears that Landon had feelings for Hope.

Hopefully, Lizzie spills the beans to her sister because it would make things a lot clearer for her.

Hope witnessing Losie (we'll go with that because this 'ship is not long for this world) making out at the dance was tough, but she didn't want to ruin their happiness, even when she learned they were planning on having sex.

She's willing to sacrifice her life, her happiness, and everything in between. Hope Mikaelson is a true hero, and her family would be proud.

Hope Searches - Legacies Season 2 Episode 2

We have her aunt Freya stopping by on Legacies Season 2 Episode 6. Will she remember the tribrid exists, or will she be a part of another storyline?

Sebastian is giving major Damon Salvatore and Elijah Mikaelson vibes. He was manipulating everyone because he was left desiccating for centuries.

M.G. was frustrating, mostly because he wanted to set the vampire free because he thought he would get closer to Lizzie's heart. That was grim, but hopefully, the teenager will be able to understand the error of his ways.

Kaleb was right to quiz Sebastian before deciding to leave him in his slumber. Alaric made some great points when he countered that he had to be desiccated for some reason.

MG Dances - Legacies Season 2 Episode 5

He wouldn't be locked up for centuries if he was a nice man. It was a shocker that poor Wade (?) got tricked into setting him free.

There's mythology here that could date back quite some time.

Sebastian should be getting the flashback treatment before long, but did he come across any pre-established characters in the franchise in those early years?

"Screw Endgame" was the strongest installment yet. The show is going from strength-to-strength by the episode.

What's your theory on Sebastian?

Will Lizzie tell Josie the truth?

Did you call Clarke posing as Vardemus?
