Switched at Birth Season 4 Episode 12 Review: How Does a Girl Like You Get to Be a Girl Like You?

It's amazing what a genetic test can tell you.
On Switched at Birth Season 4 Episode 12, Bay tried to move on with her life, but it seemed like the past was always going to haunt her. It's unfortunate after everything Bay has been through that she can't seem to move on.
Hopefully, Bay starts heading in the right direction and can help people who have gone through what she has gone through.
Let's not waste anymore time and discuss "How Does a Girl Like You Get to Be a Girl Like You?"
Why do guys always ask the woman if they're sure they're pregnant? Lily, of all people, wouldn't lie about being pregnant because it would do her no good.
Also, Toby asking if the baby was his was ridiculous – Lily has always maintained she was confused about her feelings, but never acted on them.
Lily: [at Toby's apartment] We need to talk.
Toby: I don't have anything to say. [Lily walks past Toby into his apartment] Made it pretty clear you think you're too good for me.
Lily: I'm pregnant.
Toby: Are you sure?
Lily: Of course I'm sure. Do you think I'm making this up?
Toby: Well, is it mine?
Lily: Yes it's yours.
Toby: How is that such a terrible thing to ask? You said you were into somebody else!
Lily: I said I was confused. I also said that nothing happened with him. I was faithful to you, I was honest with you all along. I didn't do anything wrong.
On the other hand, Toby's reaction to Lily's pregnancy announcement was pretty spot on. Lily had to know telling Toby about the pregnancy would instantly throw him into shock and he would possibly say some really stupid things. At least Toby had the sense to go to Lily later on and discuss the pregnancy as adults.
Instead of letting Kathryn dream about producing her musical, John should have told her right away about the money issues. Kathryn isn't a child, and they need to work together as a team to deal with these things. I understand he wants to help everyone out, but his frustration is going to get the better of him.
Daphne can get a job to pay for her tuition – college students do it all the time.
Bay's first day in Spanish class was completely cringe worthy. Not only was she being talked about by the other students, but the freaking teacher had to introduce her to the class. Thank goodness Bay has Kathryn in her life, who quickly made Bay realize she needs to hold her head up and face the world – what would we do without Kathryn?
Travis revealing to Bay about him being sexually assaulted was a complete shock. Now it makes sense why Travis has been so protective over Bay and has been defending her – he went through his own trauma, and it's bringing back memories.
I do wonder if they'll eventually put these two together because they seem to be getting closer each week.
Travis: Hey. Can we talk?
Bay: I don't know if I can. I'm too weak and vulnerable to speak for myself.
Travis: I shouldn't have freaked out like that. I know you don't need protecting. I just hate seeing people make judgements about you because of what happened with Tank.
Bay: I hate it too, but I'm dealing with it.
Travis: Good. I just... I get what you're going through.
Bay: No you don't. Everyone thinks they get it, but they don't.
Travis: I do.
Bay: What do you mean?
Travis: Something happened to me. It was a family friend. A long time ago.
Bay: Travis. I'm so sorry.
Travis: It happens to a lot of deaf kids. He thought I wouldn't tell anyone. And I didn't.
Bay: How old were you?
Travis: Twelve. They were visiting for Christmas.
Bay: And you never told Mary Beth?
Travis: [shaking his head no] I didn't know what she would think of me. And when it happened to you, it brought up some stuff I hadn't thought about in a long time.
Bay: I'm really glad you told me.
Travis: Me, too.
Bay: And I don't think any differently of you.
Travis: Thanks. [Bay gives him a hug]
It makes no sense why they would go after Melody and try to fire her because of the assault. I understand they want to point the finger at someone, but Melody is not the one to single out in this situation. Melody has put so much work in the deaf program, and they are treating her like the bad guy – give the woman some respect.
The parent Kathryn had lunch with was out of line. It was not Kathryn or Melody's fault Bay was assaulted. Kathryn was right, assaults are unfortunately happening in a lot of schools and constantly taking your child out of school isn't going to help things. It I were Kathryn, I would have thrown the glass of water in the woman's face.
Mingo was just digging himself into a deeper hole the more he tried to convince Daphne her life was harder because she is deaf. The whole conversation was an even bigger reminder of how much Mingo doesn't understand about Daphne and her life.
Does he really care about her? Of course he does, but he hasn't fully grasped who Daphne really is and what her life is really like.
Mingo: [after hearing about what's going on with Toby] Wow that's so heavy.
Daphne: Yeah, it's a lot.
Mingo: Happened to my aunt and uncle too, but um, you know.
Daphne: Well that's what most people do these days.
Mingo: Yeah. It makes sense.
Daphne: I don't think that's the obvious thing to do. Is that what you're saying?
Mingo: I am saying, that kid would have a really hard life. I think we can agree on that.
Daphne: No.
Mingo: You're not willing to admit that a family with a down syndrome kid would have a tougher life than other families?
Daphne: I think it requires more adjustments. Maybe even sacrifice, but I am sure that they have as much love and affection and happiness as any other family.
Mingo: OK.
Daphne: Do you think that my life is harder than a hearing person?
Mingo: Well, yeah.
Daphne: But you're wrong, it isn't.
Mingo: You said yourself that's maybe why you got a D in chemistry.
Daphne: I was just having a moment of weakness.
Mingo: Daphne, of course it is harder. I mean you can't hear music.
Daphne: Of course I can, in my own way.
Mingo: You can't go places where it's dark because you have to read lips.
Daphne: So I go where it's light or go with people who can sign.
Mingo: But it's harder.
Daphne: No, it isn't!
While I understand why Daphne felt the need to express her opinion to Toby, she could have kept it to herself. Whatever decision Toby and Lily make is their decision and they need to examine the entire situation for themselves and people butting in with their opinions isn't going to help them.
Kathryn making a large donation to the deaf program without John's knowledge is going to bite her on the ass. This is why John should have just been honest about their situation!
Mingo asking Josh to teach him sign language was hilarious. I would totally watch a ceremony of Mingo getting his own name sign. Mingo surprising Daphne with his new ASL skills definitely earned him some brownie points, and it further proved he is a decent guy, but just makes stupid mistakes.
