Chicago PD Season 5 Episode 18 Review: Ghosts

Much like Upton, I was holding my breath throughout all of Chicago PD Season 5 Episode 18.
Maybe there's a reason the writers didn't get around to her story until now -- she comes with a lot of baggage.
While working Antonio's case, Hailey's two worlds collided. She was forced to resurrect Kelly, an old identity, in order to take down Booth, a dangerous man who was recently released from prison for "good behavior."
It's always comical to me when perps get a lighter sentence because they weren't acting up in lock up. Is that supposed to negate all the horrible things they did outside the prison walls or guarantee that they aren't going to go back to their life of crime shortly after?
Since Kelly's past didn't unravel in a step-by-step order, we really didn't understand the magnitude of the danger this case caused her.
He wins if you do it, this is not how you beat this.

It turns out, Booth is not someone you want to run into on these cold Chicago streets. And given their dysfunctional history, I'm surprised she was so willing to re-activate Kelly.
I'm always intrigued by undercover agents. They have a whole other life that they are leading; they're friends with criminals, they do shady things, and they actually create genuine memories with these people.
They have to be very diligent about their identity.
Kelly had to have hers memorized to a T because Booth was skeptical of her, and thus, set on poking holes in it. He questioned her about high school mascots and parents names and even messed them up purposefully to see if she could get caught.
Upton: One minute he's talking ring sizes and the next, he's gone. So, screw him.
Ronnie: So why keep the picture?
Upton: To remind me to never make the same mistake again.
I was surprised he didn't ask her why she bought a $5 cup of coffee when she was allegedly broke. I guess we all do that though, right?
Thankfully, Hailey never slipped up. And neither did Jay, even when Booth asked his accomplice, Ryan, how many times he slept with Kelly.
Seriously, it's one thing to be a drug dealer, but it's another to also be a creep and rapist. Booth was all of the above.
People in the crew kept mentioning an occurrence on New Year's Eve and, much like Halstead, I wanted to know what happened that night.
Seeing the pictures of Hailey brutally beaten in the hospital sent chills down my spine. Once again, how is she bravely facing this man after what he did to her?
And while I felt for her, it was definitely bogus of her to withhold all the details from Halstead.
She's my partner, so if you know something that's putting her in danger, I need to know, now.
Halstead
But if you think that almost dying and getting raped was her motivation for revenge, think again.
At the beginning of the episode, Voight warned her not to go into this to avenge Garrett's murder. Did she listen? Of course not!
Because of what Booth did to Garrett, she was willing to do anything to take him down, but revenge always comes with a price. Rogue missions are what get you killed.
I fully expected him to question Ryan about his marriage and thought to myself, "this is it, he doesn't know the story she just told him."
Imagine if he brought it up to Ryan and realized they were lying. Booth would shoot him immediately. Risking your partner's life is never okay no matter how badly you want something!
Sadly, even epically busting Booth didn't make her feel any better because it didn't bring Garrett back.
The not knowing is what's killing her. She has no closure, no idea what happened to him and sadly, she couldn't return the favor and save him the way he saved her on New Year's Day.
Upton: I can handle this, Jay.
Halstead: That's exactly what I sad to you. You remember that? You called me out and told me I was full of crap.
I'm starting to think that to become a great Intelligence detective, you have to find yourself at a crossroads where your rage almost overpowers logical thinking, and you almost shoot someone at point-blank before your partner -- who has been there before -- talks you down from making a grave mistake.
Halstead stood by Hailey's side and even protected her when she went off the book because he's been down this road; he knows what it's like to get in too deep and make someone pay for what they did.
Well, Platt offered to buy shots which is a once-in-a-decade thing so you might want to reconsider.

They work well together, platonically. I repeat, platonically. Not everyone that works together needs to date, and it seems like Upton is very independent, so I hope they steer clear of the romance department.
However, the fact that she was romantically involved with Garrett seems like foreshadowing -- eventually, she'll fall for another partner.
All in all, this episode was successful because afterward I was left with a newfound respect and admiration for Hailey.
While much of the focus on Hailey's story, they touched briefly on the possibility of Olinsky getting pinched for Bingham's murder.
Apparently, Woods found enough evidence to convene a grand jury. In simpler terms -- it's not looking good for our friend.
Voight finally uttered the words "I'm not letting you take the fall," which he should have done the minute Olinsky was accused. Better late than never, I guess.
Ruzek: Hey honey.
Antiono: Those were blanks, right?
Atwater: Hell yeah!
But like I said in my review of Chicago PD Season 5 Episode 17, Olinsky will most certainly take the fall because he has the least amount to lose, and probably because Elias Koteas is over this show.
I would be too if they barely gave me any lines and any story that I did have fell completely flat. I didn't even remember he had a second, illegitimate daughter!
On a brighter note, did anyone else notice Antonio's beard? I hope it wasn't just for his undercover persona because I am digging it!
