The Royal Family drama continues on Marvel's Inhumans when Maximus sends reinforcements to join Auran on Earth.

One of the strengths of Marvel's Inhumans Season 1 Episode 3 is the flashbacks we got from the two brothers when they were young. You get a better understanding for Maximus as a character.

However, it did remind me about Thor and Loki's background in the Thor movies. The oldest son is worshipped by his parent(s) and given the thing the young one wants more than anything.

Let's not forget about the part where the younger child is incredibly neglected. Loki and Maximus are different in many ways, but this episode does also show some big similarities.

While Maximus never had to deal with being adopted like Loki; he does share a parallel with Thor's adoptive brother of being very different.

From a story perspective, it does feel fresh while also being a little similar to Loki's story in the early Marvel films. It all depends on what Maximus does for the rest of the season.

Ideally, I'd want Maximus not to be seen as a Loki rip-off or a watered down version for television. It's too early to tell where they are going with him but we will know in a few weeks.

Dr. Evan Declan makes his debut as a very mysterious character that could either be a friend or a foe. It was odd that a character like him to play such a big role off-screen in his debut episode.

Declan apparently has a history with Inhumans, and yet we don't get any exposition to that. The plan was maybe to use the next episode as the hour where we learn more about him.

But in many ways, it feels like we got to see act two of a story before we even witnessed act one. I did enjoy that his inmate didn't get portrayed as one-dimensional and got to play a significant part.

The scene where the other inmates celebrate Black Bolt for initially opposing the cops was hilarious. Anson Mount once again stands out with this character through just his eyes and facial expressions.

Serinda Swan's Medusa continues to be one of the strongest aspects of the series thus far. It's empowering to see a character still standing strong without her most powerful weapon.

Karnak's development was something that they could have focused more on. When you have a large cast like Marvel's Inhumans, it gets easy for some characters to not get as much focus.

The backstory about his tattoos and how he feels about himself to the family could have had a more powerful effect if it had been paced well. Instead, they rushed through it, and we see Karnak randomly deciding to stay with these strangers.

Another flawed aspect we see here is the battle between Gorgon's army and Auran's army. The action sequences weren't terrible per se, but there wasn't any wow-effect.

They must be saving their bigger moments till the end of the season. But with only eight episodes I figured the scale would get bigger for each episode.

I was expecting Crystal to have more screentime in this episode. She manages to get out of Maximus's claws and show her loyalty to her true king and queen.

But so far Crystal is one of the few characters that haven't been fleshed out well. We know that she has elemental powers and that she is Medusa's sister.

Given her important status in the comics, I was expecting the show to reflect that. That could still change in these remaining episodes.

At least now she is on Earth with Lockjaw and some stranger that dared to accidentally hurt Lockjaw. It would be dull if he were some double-agent who will get Crystal in trouble.

The pacing went up in the final minutes of the episode with Louise now getting involved. It will be unfortunate if all she ends up being is a simple guide for these characters.

There was obviously a reason why Marvel kept details on her character under wrap for so long. Sooner or later we have to know what Louise's role in the series really is.

I was overall satisfied with what went down in Marvel's Inhumans Season 1 Episode 3. We had solid flashbacks that gave us more on the complicated history between the two brothers.

Black Bolt's story had mostly humorous moments while also taking some steps forward. The Declan character intrigues me even though they should have explained his involvement better.

Despite my issues with Crystal, it was good to see the heroes get a win against Maximus. The next episode will put us right in the middle of the first season. By then I expect some of my issues from this episode to be solved.
