Game of Thrones' Kit Harington Opens Up About Controversial Series Finale

It's been months since Game of Thrones wrapped up its eighth and final season, but fans are still up in arms about the way the series concluded.

Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow on the HBO fantasy series has opened up in a new interview about his character being the one to murder Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) on Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 6.

He admitted that it was one of the most "holy f**k" moments of his career, but explained that it came down to him choosing Sansa (Sophie Turner) and Arya (Maisie Williams) or the love of his life.

"Jon essentially sees it as Daenerys or Sansa and Arya, and that makes his mind up for him," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

"He chose blood over, well, his other blood. But he chooses the people he has grown up with, the people his roots are with, the North. That's where his loyalties lie in the end. That's when he puts the knife in."

It was the topic of much debate following the finale, but many noted that the heel turn in Daenerys came on too sudden for it to feel like an organic storyline.

If you watch Game of Thrones online, you will recall her as the breaker of chains in the initial seven seasons.

Granted, the final season was accelerated somewhat thanks to a six-episode order.

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were criticized for the execution of the final episodes, with much of it stemming from the way Daenerys turned into a completely different person.

Still, a petition on Change.org was drafted up with the aim of getting the final season remade with "competent writers," and it clocked in at over 1.7 million signatures.

Some fans, however, felt like Daenerys was always going to end up being too consumed by power to make rational decisions.

Ultimately, Jon got to live another day after being sent to the Wall to return to the Night's Watch.

There has been a lot of debate surrounding whether that was a punishment or something else entirely.

"When I read it, that bit really made me cry," Harington told THR.

"Seeing [Jon] go beyond the Wall back to something true, something honest, something pure with these people he was always told he belongs with. It felt to me like he was finally free.

"Instead of being chained and sent to the Wall, it felt like he was set free."

"It was a really sweet ending. As much as he had done a horrible thing [in killing Daenerys], as much as he had felt that pain, the actual ending for him was finally being released."
