Major Crimes Star: The Cancellation Was Not a Surprise!

at .  Updated at .

TNT confirmed earlier this week that Major Crimes is officially coming to an end after Season 6.

Since then, fans have been questioning the true motive from the network for the show's demise, and it sounds like the cast and crew knew the ax was about to swing.

The Mastermind - Major Crimes

Series star, Mary McDonnell took to Instagram earlier this week to air her thoughts on the cancellation.

"Firstly, we all move on to the next TOGETHER. Secondly, as many of you have stated, this was not a surprise. The writing was clearly on the wall," McDonnell wrote.

"Trying to make sense of TNT's choices is an activity that James Duff and Mike Robin and all of us have been engaged in for a long time," she said of herself and executive producers James Duff and Michael M. Robin.

"We tried as best we could, believe me. And we are extremely proud of the work and particularly proud of Season Six."

It sounds like Mary is salty about the cancellation, but she has every right to be. Despite some slippage in the ratings, Major Crimes Season 5 still averaged 3.2 million viewers and a 0.4 rating among adults 18-49.

In total viewers, the series still ranks as the network's most-watched drama. But, just like Rizzoli & Isles, it was sagging in the younger demographics.

If you look at the network's newer offerings, it is trying to entice the younger demographics back to watch their programming.

Mary mentioned the executive producer, James Duff in her Instagram post, and he released his take on the end of the show.

"I'm directing the finale of Major Crimes, so I can't really answer all the questions that are being asked today about why Major Crimes was cancelled before we ran our sixth season," the producer wrote on Facebook.

"But I do want you to know that it was not at all my idea, nor did I want to leave the show." "We'll have a chance to talk about what happened in the near future," he promised viewers.

"Meanwhile, we are determined to give you the best season we can. So sorry I couldn't stop this moment from happening."

Provenza

Provenza: Oh this is a crappy way to make a living. Working with the worst the world has to offer without being in charge.
Flynn: You weren't in charge for eight years.
Provenza: Yeah, but now I'm mad about it.
