The Affair is coming to an end at Showtime.
The premium cable network has confirmed the series will return for its final season next summer.
“We love the intimacy, the nuance and the emotional honesty of The Affair’s subjective examination of both infidelity and fidelity,” said Gary Levine, Showtime’s President of Programming, in a statement.
“[Exec producer] Sarah Treem has always envisioned this as a five-season series, and we will be fascinated to see where she takes her talented cast and all of us next year in its climactic season.”
Starring Dominic West, Maura Tierney, Ruth Wilson and Joshua Jackson, The Affair debuted back in 2014 and is currently airing its fourth season on the network.
The beauty of the series is that it is kept fresh by telling the story from multiple perspectives, meaning there are distinct differences in some of the storylines depending on the character we are following.
The series garnered a lucrative tax credit to move production to California for The Affair Season 4, and it has resulted in most of the action moving to another coast.
It has been a return to form for the show after a polarizing third season which focused on some characters who were not important to the overall narrative.
It has taken a hit in the ratings this time around, slipping almost 50 percent in the demo to a 0.1 rating. But Showtime focuses on the total viewer tally more because it is driven by subscribers.
In live + same day ratings, The Affair Season 4 is pulling in around 500,000 viewers per week.
There's no word yet on an episode tally for the final season, but it will likely be around 10.
