Yellowstone Season 2 Episode 2 revolves around the changes in the Dutton family's life following John's surgery.

John's doctor tells him he needs physical therapy before reluctantly letting John go home. After his release, John's first order of business is to confront Kaycee about the fight he had on the wranglers' behalf. Kaycee points out he has to defend the people he's living with, prompting John to make the decision to put Kaycee in charge of the ranch. John also requires Rip, who wants to get into it with Walker, to fight with Kaycee so that Kaycee can assert his authority.

Meanwhile, Beth learns from a real estate agent about a large parcel of land that supposedly isn't for sale and gets the owner to buy before returning to the ranch, where she is sympathetic towards Rip and not happy with Kaycee.

Meanwhile, Monica deals with a misogynistic student on her first day teaching. After class is over, the Dean recommends she take advantage of her employee perks by moving to university housing and signing up for physical therapy. However, when Monica tells her father about her decision to move, he disapproves of her continued estrangement from Kaycee.
