On The Good Doctor Season 4 Episode 1, the COVID-19 pandemic takes center stage.

The hour begins at the beginning of the pandemic, with Morgan seeing a patient who has flu-like symptoms and reassuring her she does not have the virus. Soon the woman's condition worsens, and other patients come into the hospital presenting with similar symptoms.

Claire takes care of that patient while Shaun sees a patient who he is sure has COVID and has lost his sense of smell. Shaun initially sends his patient home since he's not having trouble breathing, but he soon returns and ends up having both lung and heart problems.

And when Morgan sees a patient who doesn't have any COVID symptoms, she discovers too late that she's exposed the entire non-COVID ward to the deadly virus.

Meanwhile, the doctors' personal relationships are tested by the pandemic. Park elects not to go back to Phoenix because he doesn't want to expose his wife and son and instead stays with Shaun, who misses having sex with Lea but claims not to miss her. And Glassman and Debbie argue more and more as the pandemic goes on and they are forced to spend most of their time together.

The Good Doctor Season 4 Episode 1 Quotes

Shaun: You have COVID-19. I can tell without a test, which is a good thing because we don't have any.
Man: But I can't smell. That's not a symptom.
Shaun: It is now.
Man: So I have COVID. Now what?
Shaun: Go home. There's no treatment. Rest, stay away from people, come back if you have trouble breathing. Goodbye.

Lea: Have you seen my ID badge?
Shaun: This wouldn't have happened if you had stayed over.
Lea: My ability to lose things has not changed since I lived here.
Shaun: If you had stayed over you wouldn't have had to come back here.
Lea: It's too soon.
Shaun: Why is it too soon?
Lea: We've only been together a few weeks.
Shaun: How many weeks are required before you can stay over?
