Within the opening minutes of the premiere, Cassie Blake's mother is killed in a mysterious fire, seemingly started by a mysterious man outside her house. As a result, Cassie is uprooted and move in with her grandmother in Chance Harbor, Washington.

Once there, it doesn't take long for Cassie to meet Adam, whose father runs a local restaurant. These two bond a bit, and Cassie eventually learns she's part of a coven of witches. She's unsure what to make of this, but she and Adam continue to bond, as the latter teaches the former what kind of powers they can have as a group.

Also part of the coven: Faye, who wants to use the group's powers as often and as strongly as possible; Diana, the head of the coven, Adam's girlfriend and the only member who has her family's history book, which helps her gather information about witchcraft; Melissa, Faye's BFF; and Nick.

Adam's father, meanwhile, is a drunk who rattles on about the past and what happened to his wife 16 years ago. He's eventually threatened by Diana's father, Charles, who is the same man that killed Cassie's mom. There's a history in this town of an older generation of witches, and something went terribly wrong many years ago between them.

Dawn, Faye's mother and the school principal, also appears to be on Charles' evil side. Cassie's grandmother, meanwhile, is/was a part of their coven, but does not want history to repeat itself.
