Recap

North America, 2000 B.C.

We have our own stones!!

1767 America

Claire talks about Humans' fascination with circles and how they affect life and death moving from the stone circle to a noose.

Jamie is visiting Gavin Hayes before he goes to the gallows to give him a snip of whiskey and hear his last requests. Others would like some whiskey, too.

Gavin had killed a man and was sentenced to death as their group made their way up the coast. Jamie tried to save Hayes, but the magistrate wouldn't listen.

Fergus hoped to save Hayes, but Jaime just gave Hayes what he wanted, his smiling face as the last Hayes saw before he died.

When a man, possibly Hayes' father, grieves loudly in the crowd, one of the men who was in line for the gallows makes a noisy and fussy escape.

It's also difficult to find a place to bury Hayes because nobody wants to bury him on consecrated ground.

While burying Hayes, Ian has memories of Geillis rising up out of a pool of blood and walking toward him. Ian told Geillis he wasn't a virgin, and that wasn't to her liking.

Geillis raped him, and Ian and Jamie talk kindly.

Afterward, Stephen Bonnet is discovered in the back of the wagon. He's a nasty pirate, although disarmingly charming.

After the body is buried (with the help of Stephen), the group sets off again. They are stopped ahead by the redcoats who want to know about the body in the back. They stab the corpse in the leg -- luckily for Bonnet getting venison instead.

When they have a moment alone, Bonnet confides in Claire about his fascination of infinite circles, his nightmares of drowning and the sea pulling at him.

When they drop off Bonnet to be on his way, he expresses what an amazing gentleman he finds Jamie to be and warns them of thieves and outlaws. The couple then has to camp in the woods for the night.

Claire and Jamie make love so they don't have to have foreplay and Claire can orgasm in under 30 seconds like all real women.

Jamie discovers the American Dream is much like Scotland's nightmare for the indigenous people living on the land called America.

From the woods to the society dinner table, the Frasers are at the Willingtons where she tries to sell a ruby necklace. While a woman across the table tritely calls her Edinburgh hairstyle "charming," the man next to her wants to look more closely at her necklace. Well done, Claire!

The dinner guests are impressed Jamie is the nephew of Jacosta Cameron. River Run is well placed, it seems.

If Jamie swears allegiance to the king, there is a possibility of land grants. Because there is the law where one must pay coin for land, or there is what is done.

Claire balks when Jamie mentions purchasing passage to Scotland with the money she secured with the sale of the ruby.

Claire wants to consider the offer the Governor made to Jamie. Jamie's idea of considering it is much different than hers.

The Revolutionary War is in eight years. Claire is worried if he accepts the offer and swears allegiance, he'll be expected to fight on behalf of the crown and they'll be on the wrong side of history again.

But they decide to stay.

Ian has been playing the dice. He won a gorgeous dog that he's named Rollo, and some silver. Jamie is determined to send Ian back to Scotland despite Ian's protests.

Everyone wants to stay, but Jamie and Claire are both skittish.

Fergus and Marsali are pregnant! They will stay in Wilmington until she gives birth, at least. Everyone is happy.

Jamie has a present for Claire as they roll down the water. It's a doctor's kit or something similar.

It's been 24 years since they were married and they haven't aged two years since.

While they were sleeping, Bonnet comes up on the boat (because he'd been tracking them? Good God), and starts beating on everyone.

Claire screams for Ian to get the hell out of there. Claire is trying to keep her ring when Hayes' dad or whatever loses his life to save it. Claire swallows them. It's her anniversary, after all.

Bonnet puts his finger in her mouth, and he gets her original ring.

This all goes down while America America plays in the background. Not cool.

Outlander Season 4 Episode 1 Quotes

Bonnet: I never married, although I've always been partial to rings. The watchman dispossessed me of mine. There's something about the notion of an infinite circle that fascinates me.
Claire: The hangman's noose is a circle that you'd do well to avoid in the future.

Ian: Have you ever lain with someone when you didn't want to do it?
Jamie: I have.
Ian: Then you understand how it can be that you can do it without wishing to, detesting it, and all the while it feels pleasing.
Jamie: Ay. What it comes down to, it comes down to is that your cock doesn't have a conscience, but you have. It's not your fault. You did what you must. You survived. That's all that matters.
