In Major Crimes Season 4 Episode 5, the detectives are called upon to investigate a grisly triple homicide. The victims were shot and killed by a member of a powerful street gang, making investigation difficult because witnesses won't talk. When Sykes meets the only witness--a 12 year old girl who saw the shooting from her window--she must find a way to protect her identity so that the gang won't hurt her. At first, Sykes keeps the existence of any witness at all to herself, but when the girl calls for help because the killer is right under her window, she knows she can't do that.

Sykes isn't the only one experiencing a crisis of conscience this week. During an intense therapy session, Rusty shares Alice's messages with Dr. Joe, but when Dr. Joe insists he talk about himself and why this case is so important to him, Rusty realizes he identifies with Alice because he also is a street kid who is just lucky to have made it.
