The detectives are called to investigate the shooting of a gay and lesbian rights activist and her family. Both parents, Joan and Sydney, die, but the daughter, Emmy, only suffers a serious injury. Although the crime looks to be a related to the Joan's job, evidence points to the possible involvement of the family's former housekeeper, Carmen, and her ex-con brother, Jimmy. Jimmy has found religion, providing an alibi for the night of the murders. However, when the detectives find out that the Emmy told Carmen about being repeatedly sexually assaulted by her father, it becomes clear that the brother and sister were only trying to protect Emmy. Emmy confesses that she was part of the plan to kill her parents because her father raped her and her mother didn't do anything to stop it. She was suppose to be with her boyfriend that night and was accidentally shot.
