Recap

After revealing himself as Daenerys' "gift," Tyrion stands before the Queen attempting to prove his value to her.

Her first line of business is what to do about Jorah Mormont, who she swore to kill if he ever returned. Dany asks Tyrion for his counsel on the matter and he warns her that killing Jorah would not inspire devotion. She decides to spare the man, but exiles him again. Understanding his days are numbered due to the greyscale, Jorah gives up his freedom to fight before Dany in the pits.

As Dany and Tyrion bond over their "terrible fathers," it becomes clear the two are impressed with one another. Ultimately, Daenerys decides Tyrion will be more useful to her alive and appoints him advisor. Dany confides in Tyrion that she wishes to break the vicious cycle that has ruled over Westeros for far too long.

In King's Landing, Cersei refuses to confess to her indiscretions and is informed her son, King Tommen, has locked himself in his room refusing to eat. The High Sparrow has a strong case against Cersei. Things are not looking good for her at the moment.

Sansa expresses her disappointment in Theon/Reek, who disclosed her escape plan to her cruel husband. The broken man tells Sansa he was trying to help her, as Ramsay will no doubt torture her if she tried to flee. While confessing his crimes, Theon/Reek lets slip that Bran and Rickon were not killed. He tells her that two farm boys were burnt in their place. This news revitalizes Sansa, giving her hope her little brothers are still out there somewhere. She's not the last of the Stark's after all.

Speaking of which, Arya continues to train with Jaqen H'ghar at the House of Black and White. She has learned to lie, and has taken on the persona of "Lanna." As she tells her intricate tale, Jaqen seems pleased and hands her a vial for a man in the market who cheats his clients. Will she kill the man? Is that what is expected of her?

At Castle Black, Olly questions Jon’s decision to fight alongside the wildlings. After all, they killed his entire family. Sam informs the boy that the White Walkers are the real threat. When the time comes, they will need every last man on their side.

Elsewhere, Jon, Tormund and Dolorous Edd arrive at Hardhome; a free folk settlement north of the Wall. The Lord Commander talks of an alliance, and offers the free folk weapons and land in exchange for their loyalty. Though Tormund vouches for Jon's leadership, only several thousand wildlings board the Night's Watch ships to return to the Wall.

Suddenly, the weather takes a turn and the temperature drops even further. The wildlings realize the Army of the Dead have come to Hardhome. Those that find themselves trapped outside the gates are massacred and soon become White Walkers themselves.

As Jon fights to save the dragonglass daggers, he's confronted by a White Walker lieutenant. The two fight to the death, and it's Longclaw's Valyrian steel that finally destroys the monster. From the cliffs above, the Night's King watches Jon Snow.

Though they find themselves overrun by White Walkers, Jon, Tormund, Edd and several others make it to their ships. As his boat drifts off, Jon watches the Night's King raise his arms and along with them the dead wildlings. The Lord Commander has inadvertently helped the Night's King grow his Army of the Dead.

Game of Thrones Season 5 Episode 8 Quotes

Daenerys: Why should I spend my time listening to you?
Tyrion: Because you can not build a better world on your own. You have no one at your side who understands the land you want to rule. The strength and weaknesses of the houses that will either join or oppose you.
Daenerys: I will have a very large army and very large dragons.
Tyrion: Killing and politics aren't always the same thing.

The White Walkers don't care if a man's free folk or crow. We're all the same to them, meat for their army. But together we can beat them.
