Recap

While Brett jumps Antonio at his apartment, Boden announces that his stepson James will be in the firehouse for some job shadowing. That's not the only move: Casey offers Hermann the helm for a shift to test his fitness for a rumored promotion before Severide confronts Casey about the arson case from the previous week still being pursued.

On the way to render aid for Truck, Dawson hits a pedestrian with the ambulance. She and Brett transport the victim to Chicago Med but Dawson is immediately under scrutiny as the man goes into a coma. The victim's son declares his intent to sue Dawson and the CFD. Antonio digs into the victim's past and discovers that he previously attempted suicide. Dawson takes this information to the son who appears to reconsider the lawsuit.

Casey and Severide agree to meet at their crime scene where they find the remains of an automated home management system. The two confront Darren Whitney with the evidence that he started the fire with the system's app on his phone. He admits to the arson but only because he was trying to get himself and his wife out of debt by burning down their house. His wife's death was an accident.

Hermann eventually has a meeting with the district chief but the higher-ups want him to take a suspension and accept liability for moving Truck's victim to the hospital without an ambulance. This sets off Hermann, who explodes about everything from Dawson to the amount of polyester in the dress uniforms, and he loses his chance at promotion but is content to not be in charge.

Boden comes under fire himself because he turned down a function in New York to stay and deal with the situation, but it comes out that Boden was present on 9/11 and the function was related to that. Casey and Severide accompany Boden to New York where he reunites with his colleagues from that day.
