Here is where I want to be. You are good, kind, safe and so perfectly flawed that even your jagged parts fit mine just right. On your worst day your spirit flies so high that it make everything round you better. So I commit to you, to us, and I have learned the difference between a love that liberates and a love that feels like it’s always been free. I choose freedom. I choose love. I choose you.

Violet

I found what I had been looking for since the day that I was born. I found the woman my soul was meant to love. Vi, I want to be your soft place that lifts your hard world. I want to cheer you on every day and I want to let you know how beautiful you are every night. And I love you.

You see I’m one of the lucky ones. I survived. I’m here. I got a mom and a dad that can help me. But what if I didn’t have that? What happens to me then? If they build this prison St. Jo becomes another example of what’s wrong with America instead of what’s right.

Micah

I have been a black woman for a hell of a long time, so, the devil I know, the devil I don’t, it doesn’t matter. I’ll conquer them all.

Charley

It’s good to have friends in your corner but sometimes being a leader means walking alone.

Nova

You find something good and wrap your heart around it. Don’t let it go. That’s all we got.

Ralph Angel

Everyone’s telling me, write your own story, speak your truth, raw, unflinching. This is what I want to say. These words are who I am even as painful as some were to write.

Nova

Since then I’ve been wondering, like, why this officer felt that he could abuse me and just walk away and the only answer I can think of is this cop felt his dignity, his life, was worth more than mine. But I won’t allow my fear, my silence to protect this man anymore. My abuser’s name is Officer Randall Orson. You see the real problem if we build this prison is that it tells cops like Randall Orson that it’s okay to do what he did. The real problem is if they build that jail, the prison, they’re gonna fill it. The real cost of the prison isn’t in dollars and cents, okay. Prisons aren’t made of bricks and mortar they’re made of bodies and blood. If we allow this, St. Jo becomes another place that puts hope in cages and continues to systematically destroy the lives of black and brown people. But we can stop that. I truly believe that we, we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

Micah

Charley: This is momentum. This creates change. You did that.
Micah: All I did was tell the truth.
Charley: Well if standing up and telling the truth was easy, everyone would do it.

You made a deal with a woman who would stab her own brother in the back and watch him bleed out. In God’s name, what do you think she’s going to do to you? Hmm? The devil you know, Ms. Bordelon, the devil you know.

Ralph Angel: You know what we don’t do?
Blue: What?
Ralph Angel: Quit.

What about the mothers of the sons that you locked up so that Lauren’s sons could have a job. You got any letters from them or do you just go from town to town reading these same generic quotes over and over and over and over again?
