    I don´t know anything about the residency years and how long it is supposed to be in real life there in USA, I am just stating facts, what has been said in the episodes of greys

    Mer, Cristina and Alex are all third year resident as it is said in episode 20 of the sixth season ("Tom Evans: You already applied for your fellowship? Cristina:I am only in third year")

    The Residency is 5 years .Then 2 years for a fellowship .

    The writers tend to play fast and loose with time and when events happened (sometimes I think they just forget what they had previously written .But we do know that

     

    Seasons 1,2 and 3 were 1 calendar year ( finished with the Intern Exam )

    Seasons 4 and 5 were also 1 year              ( season 6 stats with Lexie being a resident)

    Season 6 was a year  and actually followed a normal timeline ( Webber was sober for 6 months by the time of the finale.

     

     

    Mer,Chris and Alex will be Year 4s this year and Lexie will be a Year 3 .

    ellen pompeo (meredith grey) has a contract up through season 8. she has stated in an interview that after her contract expires she most likely wont renew. patrick dempsey also has made statements about whether or not he will continue past season 8. shonda has stated that she originally planned the show for 8 seasons but could continue past that. it really just depends on the cast and i think the big question here is can there be a greys anatomy with meredith grey and derek shepherd??

    make it a point to see to it that George O'malley returns from Iraq as earlier mentioned by Little Grey. he was just to fine completing the entire team of residents ie; Meredith, Karev, Yang, Izzy, George. that was a damn good team of upcoming attending surgeons.
