Its always "oh Damon, what a badddddd person you are, how baaaad you are" versus "oh steffie you are such a good guy everyone should strive to be", which annoyed the shit out of me in S2 already.
Let's not forget S3 where Steffie was killing people lleft and right but its okay, its okay, he has an excuse and everyone does not even mention it. However Damon snaps one person's neck and the entire cast is ready to burn him alive. See what I mean?
If show had given Andie rape plot to Steffie, it would beforehand be sure to mention that Steffie has this rare mystical illness that takes control of his body and makes him do stuff like that. If show had given the "force blood down elena's throat" to Steffie, the show would make sure that someone has compelled him to do it, as well as to add a romantic music to that scene, to emphasize how tragic it is for steffie to obviously be forced to do that.
And no neither is better as characters, they are IDENTICAL, but show perceives them so differently. And both ways are incredibly annoying.
