Baby Burzek is on board. 

Fans of the Burgess and Ruzek relationship can breathe a sigh of relief after Chicago PD Season 7 Episode 8 because the formerly engaged couple has agreed to keep the baby and see where their journey takes them.

Burgess' shock at learning she was pregnant was understandable. 

She went to Med to deal with a cut on her arm and left with her whole future flipped upside down. 

It's slightly irritating that the baby bombshell got revealed via a teaser at the end of Chicago PD Season 7 Episode 7 because we should have been just as surprised by the news as Burgess.

Giving away too much in a teaser ruins the fun! 

Ruzek: I don't want you to be alone in all of this. I think you should let me drive you to the appointment in the morning.
Burgess: Yeah, that's not necessary.
Ruzek: No, I know that you're a strong, independent woman and all that, but I care about you. And I want to be there for you.
Burgess: Having this baby would be so hard, Adam.
Ruzek: I'm not trying to influence you either way.
Burgess: Let me finish that. Maybe it's selfish of me with this job and being single, but I don't want to miss the opportunity to miss a mom. And I don't want to make a decision I might regret.
Ruzek: Okay, what does that mean?
Burgess: I don't know what it means other than I canceled the appointment.
Ruzek: Okay. Alright. It'll be okay.

Not using one of the Chicago Med characters to deliver the news to Burgess was a missed opportunity. 

Natalie Manning would have been the perfect choice rather than a random doctor we've never seen before.

If Burgess had a personal connection to the doctor delivering the news, it would have allowed her to get a little more in-depth about her mindset. 

She could have confided in Manning (or anyone else from the Med staff) about her shock, concerns, uncertainty, and more, which would have made for more effective scenes.

Instead, we got Burgess handling all of her emotions internally with the external coming from the distressing case-of-the-week.

It was that case that convinced Burgess she didn't want to go through with the abortion and wanted to embrace the new, unplanned part of her life.

She mentioned always wanting to become a mother someday, but someday is now. Some of the best blessings happen unexpectedly.

Burgess gained a newfound perspective on the power of motherhood when she saw Ali, a woman who had gone through something so heartbreaking and unimaginable, declare that her son as the "best thing that ever happened to her" despite what she had suffered.

Was the pregnancy unplanned? Yes. Was Burgess scared out of her mind? Yes. But unlike Ali, she had a support system and a good man who would be there by her side.

Ruzek already proved that he would support whatever decision she made, which redeems him slightly.

And who knows? Maybe this will be the necessary step to bring Burgess and Ruzek back together permanently. 

Their relationship got sidetracked by their career goals, and since then, they've been too afraid to commit.

If we're going to have a strong, solid couple on the show, I think Burzek makes sense.

Of course, it also allows Upstead to pursue their feelings for each other; it's the greenlight they've been waiting for.

Ruzek cannot be mad that Upton moved on if he's having a baby with his ex.

I was surprised by how quickly Burgess told Ruzek.

I expected her to grapple with the decision or at least push it off till she found the right time to tell him, but coming out and saying it proves she respects him.  

And it's not like Burgess could have talked it through with anyone else on the team. Rojas is too new, and Upton is the baby daddy's ex. It doesn't exactly make for good "girl talk."

The episode managed to balance the personal aspects and the case-of-the-week evenly.

Intelligence dealt with another dark female-abuse case. 

Interestingly enough, those cases usually involve Burgess in a personal way.

Remember when her sister got to town and was the victim of a sexual assault?

This time around, Burgess spearheaded the mission to find the killer that dumped a woman's body behind some bushes.

Surprisingly, the killer was also responsible for kidnapping another young girl who was believed to be alive. 

Given that Burgess just found out she was pregnant, she was almost too emotionally involved in the case.

Had Voight known her predicament, he probably would have pulled her participation back a bit. 

I cannot be the only one who was looking through squinted eyes when she ran inside the store to exchange gunfire with Ray Lambert. 

Finding Ray's son, Henry, was also a priority for Burgess. She'd never allow a child to die, but she was especially motivated to find the child after learning she was going to be a mother.

The one flaw with the heavy storyline was that it didn't go as in-depth as it could have.

We never saw Intelligence follow up with Ali's parents to inform them that they were right about her daughter's kidnapping.

When they first visited that home and the mom mentioned seeing her daughter at a park a few years back, the father looked so shady that I immediately assumed he was involved. 

Maybe I'm just programmed to expect the worst from men closest to the victim when it comes to kidnapping and abuse scandals.

Nine times out of ten, it's someone in the family.

We didn't even see Claire reunite with her family, which would have made her rescue more effective.

The episode was interesting and had plenty of worthwhile twists along with some good false leads that kept you on your toes. 

Finding out that Ramiro Lopez was trying to help and save Ali was unexpected. 

The other twist was that Ray killed Ali to protect his son.

Burgess: I'm pregnant.
Ruzek: What?
Burgess: Yeah, the doctor ran some tests while I was getting stitched up this morning, and I am pregnant.
Ruzek: Is it...
Burgess: Yes.
Ruzek: From the night of the...
Burgess: Yeah, after that night.
Ruzek: Okay, are you sure that...
Burgess: I don't need this.
Ruzek: Okay, sorry.
Burgess: I'm sure.
Ruzek: Huh. Okay, what do you want to do?
Burgess: I don't know, Adam. What do you want to do?
Ruzek: I don't know, I'm kind of playing catch-up over here. Uhm, I mean do you want a kid? I know when we were together you said you wanted kids.
Burgess: I do want kids... someday.
Ruzek: Okay, well listen, whatever you decide, I'm going to be there, and I'll support you.

That, along with the fact that he'd let Henry die before he let him go, proved Ray's instability. 

But overall, storyline felt more like a crutch to build up Burgess' pregnancy storyline and help us understand why she decided to risk her career to become a mother. 

Burgess is going to be a great mom, there's no doubt about that, but I wonder if it will sideline her career.

It's refreshing that her approach is one of caution and concern while acknowledging that she may never have a chance like this again. 

Unless you've always had that maternal instinct, most women are scared and unsure. Burgess' reaction felt authentic and honest.

Plus, in this day and age, the concern of how it will impact a career one has spent years working towards is valid. 

Dude: Claire and I had genuine feelings for each other. Why is that so hard for you people to understand?
Upton: Because she was a 17-year-old girl you stupid prick.

Will she still be a core part of the show? Will there be a time jump? Who will be with the baby when both mom and dad are working?

This is a new story avenue for Chicago PD, but it'll be fun to explore its repercussions not only on Burzek but also on the team.
