Gossip Girl is coming back!
HBO Max, the forthcoming Warner Media streaming service has handed out a straight to series order for a reboot of the hit CW drama.
The news comes around seven years after the original show concluded its six-season run.
This reboot will follow a brand new group of private school teenagers in Manhattan.
According to the streaming service, the reboot “will address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.”
Original series creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are back at the wheel as Executive Producers, so that's some good news, we guess.
Joshua Safran, an Executive Producer on the original series, is also returning, and will even write some of the episodes.
While the reboot craze is nauseating, having the original creative forces back should help get fans intrigued at the prospect of revisiting the scandalous exploits of Manhattan's elite.
At this stage, there is no word on any returning cast members, but could you imagine Gossip Girl without Kristen Bell narrating?
That's a scary thought and one that could become a reality given how busy Bell has been since the show concluded.
It's also unclear whether this new series will ignore the events of the previous series, or if there will be hints about what the former characters are up to today.
In any case, this could be a reboot done right, because we need to remember here that social media has advanced in the years since the series concluded.
This could either be very good or very bad, but only time will tell.
Rumors of a Gossip Girl reboot have been swirling for years, but they garnered traction in January when current CW boss Mark Pedowitz admitted there are discussions about bringing the show back.
“There’s a discussion, but I don’t know if we’re there yet,” he said after being asked about the possibility of bringing the show back.
“I don’t know what it would be. A lot is up to Warner Bros. and [exec producers] Josh [Schwartz] and Steph[anie Savage], ’cause you don’t want to do anything without them.”
