9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 17 Review: Careful What You Wish For

at . Comments

In the blink of an eye your entire world can be turned upside down.

Every episode 9-1-1 brings us whirlwind rescues and happy endings, reminding us that miracles do exist. But you can't save everyone, and 9-1-1 shows us that as well.

On 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 17 we saw both ends of the spectrum, and we said goodbye to a member of Station 118's extended family.

Concerned Eddie - 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 17

When Shannon came back, both Eddie and the audience at large were skeptical of her motives.

Was she really looking to right her past wrongs? Or was there something more sinister at play?

It took her time, a lot of time if we're being honest, to prove herself to be a person worthy of receiving a second chance.

She stepped up to the plate and forged a closer relationship with Christopher, while also strengthening her bond with Eddie.

And even though we never got a chance to delve into her character, Shannon was able to achieve her redemption arc.

Eddie's decision to take the leap and fully commit to Shannon again seemed like it was born from a place of love and not obligation.

And Shannon's decision to ask for a divorce also felt like it came from a good place.

She hadn't been back in the picture long enough to feel completely comfortable with who she was, nor had she completely reconciled with the things she'd done in the past.

A Day At The Beach - 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 17

While she may have loved Eddie, she knew that for them to have any future at all, she needed to focus on herself, as that was the best way for her to become a better mother and eventually a better partner.

It's incredibly, ridiculously sad that she won't get the chance to continue growing as a person.

Perhaps I should have seen her death coming, but it didn't exactly feel like this is where the story was going. Poor Eddie and Christopher had just gotten Shannon back, and just like that she's gone.

Eddie comes across as an extremely strong person, but this is the kind of thing that can break a man.

Hold Me Back - 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 17

He's got a whole station full of amazingly supportive people who care for him, and I hope he utilizes them to get through this time.

We need you back, Bobby. The place doesn't work without you.

Buck

With Bobby still suspended, it was only right that Chimney becomes the interim captain. And it wasn't the least bit surprising that he went on a bit of a power trip.

It wasn't a full-blown power trip, but it was pretty close. Chimney was playing it up in the beginning, but when push came to shove he turned out to be the perfect person for the job.

The Resident Review: The Unbefriended

Even calling Bobby for help was a mature, captain-like thing to do.

He could have let his pride get in the way and wasted precious time trying to formulate a plan, but instead, he called the one person who would know exactly what to do.

Ready To Go - 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 17

Having everyone seek out Bobby for advice was a nice way of incorporating Bobby into the episode outside of him being in the middle of the action.

Bobby has made an impact on everyone, and he's always willing to lend a helping hand.

I almost wish Maddie would have sought out some advice from Bobby too, as she was at a professional crossroads.

Maddie: I spent years not having a voice, and now that I do, it just feels like what I'm saying doesn't matter.
Sue: Oh, I think you underestimate yourself and your contribution here.
Maddie: I appreciate that. But honestly, here I'm just a person who sends help, and I need to get back to being the person who gives it.

Maddie was right when she talked about the unknown of what happens once the caller hangs up. It has to be agonizing to wonder what happened and whether or not help got there in time.

Perhaps if you've been there for a long while like Sue and Josh it's easier to comprehend, but Maddie is relatively new. And while she may be a natural at the mechanical part of the job, she's still learning how to deal with the human side.

Athena Looking Back - 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 17

Having some of the past people Maddie has helped come to talk to her felt like something that only happens on television, but it was moving nonetheless.

Maddie does a lot of good every single day, and maybe she doesn't get to hear how every story ends, but she should know that her words make a difference.

Gloria summed it up best when she told Maddie that she gives people hope. And that can be the most important part of the story.

Calamity at a Chocolate Factory - 9-1-1

Loose Ends

  • The chocolate rescue was one of the best of the season. The whole scene was giving off major Willy Wonka vibes.
  • Although we didn't get to see much, it's easy to assume that Bobby is an amazing wedding planner, right? There's no way this man isn't going to have the most spectacular wedding.
  • Hen and Chimney have the purest friendship on the show. I have much greater respect for it after seeing both of their backstory episodes this season.
  • The serial bomber storyline is going to devastate us, isn't it?

We are almost at the finish line guys.

I want to know what you guys thought about this one.

What are you looking forward to in the next episode.
