Riverdale Round Table: Toni's Undercover Mission

at . Comments

Toni went undercover at The Farm, Archie accepted a boxing rematch with Randy, and Jellybean got kidnapped by The Gargoyle King on Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18.

Below, TV Fanatics Brandon Vieira, Becca Newton, and Kat Pettibone debate Betty returning Alice to The Farm, the romantic spark between "Varchie," and Betty's reputation at Riverdale High.

Cheryl and Alice both believed that they saw Jason and Charles, and that they hugged them. How do you think Edgar Evernever is making this miracle happen?

Brandon: The Riverdale drug trade has been such a big storyline on the show that I have feeling it's connected here somehow. Perhaps Edgar's secretly drugging them with an odd batch of Fizzle Rocks and then seeing their dead loved ones is a major side effect.

Ringside Rest - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18

Becca: Drugs. During the Heathers episode on Riverdale Season 3 Episode 16, Kevin hallucinated seeing Midge right after he ate Evelyn's mushroom brownie.

The Farm must be feeding the same substances to Cheryl, Alice, Fangs, and everyone else they indoctrinate.

Kat: I don't really see any other answer besides drugs, which has been a major focus of Riverdale Season 3. Obviously, Edgar has serious powers of persuasion, but I'm pretty sure drugs are helping him along.

Friendly Favors - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18

Evelyn looked pretty shaken up after Betty threatened to kill her. What do you think Betty's reputation is at Riverdale High?

Brandon: I mean her father is a serial killer, so I imagine the rumors about the apple not falling far from the tree are pretty well known around Riverdale High.

Evelyn's likely never been afraid of anyone before thanks to her powerful father, but Betty isn't falling into their trap and that's got to be frightening for Evelyn.

Becca: It's hard to tell how the general population of Riverdale High perceives Betty. Given what is public knowledge about her, you would expect to see her treated as a social pariah. The only instance of that happening I can recall was back in Riverdale Season 1 Episode 13 when her lock was vandalized.

Otherwise, no one is seen shunning Betty or demanding her to transfer schools. She participates in extracurricular activities without objection. Ethel thought Betty lives a charmed life long after the Coopers' reputation as a perfect family was demolished, and other than Evelyn, Kevin, Alice, and Betty herself, no one brings up Betty's unsavory reputation.

In short, most of Riverdale High does not give a fig about Betty's reputation.

Evelyn: We have copies of those tapes, Betty. And copies of those copies.
[Betty walks to Evelyn and presses her to a locker]
Betty: Let me make something very clear. You and your dad may have brainwashed my mom, but I see right through your enlightened Farm-y c***. So, stop messing with me, stop messing with my family, and stop messing with my friends. Better yet, don’t even think about coming near me and my mom ever again.
[Evelyn tries to break free, but Betty pushes her back and presses her arm to Evelyn’s neck]
Betty: Because if you do, Evelyn, I will kill you. And if you don’t believe me, ask around. People will tell you what I’m capable of.
[Betty walks away, Evelyn looks scared]

Kat: I actually found that comment to be a bit confusing. We as an audience know about Betty's issues, as does Jughead and the people close to her. But would Riverdale High know the details?

Her whole issue was having to look like the "perfect girl" when deep down she fights against a darkness. But that darkness is meant to be hidden, for the most part.

Then again, there was everything with Chuck Clayton and her father as The Black Hood, so her reputation is probably an unstable one.

Betty returned Alice to The Farm after failing to de-program her of the brainwashing. Do you think she made the right call?

Brandon: I don't think she had much of a choice if she wanted her relationship with her mother to still be viable.

If she continued to keep her away from The Farm against her own will, Alice may have never forgiven Betty. Any ounce of saving their relationship would be long gone.

Betty made the right call for the long-term despite how hard it was.

Betty: The past is part of who you are. You’re Alice Cooper! You bought a house on Elm Street. You painted our door red.
Alice: I lived with a murderer in that house!
Betty: You raised me and Polly in it too! Bad things happen, but you can’t get rid of your past because then you’d lose the good parts too.
Alice: There’s been so much pain.
Betty: I know, I know. But, that’s what makes us stronger. Edgar doesn’t see that.

Becca: It's not a great decision, but there's no better alternative. Betty can't keep Alice confined in the bunker indefinitely, and all institutions in Riverdale are hopelessly corrupt.

If by some miracle Betty could find a legitimate institution to help Alice, it couldn't provide much help due to red tape and Alice's unwillingness. The Farm needs to be brought down first before Betty has a chance of getting Alice back.

Fizzle Rocks Hunt - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18

Kat: I actually do. Not saying she should give up on trying to find out what Edgar's game is, but Edgar wasn't wrong in telling Betty that Alice needs to heal in her own way.

I think it's understandable Alice wanted to sell the house and get away from her old normal after everything that happened with Chic and Hal. I can't imagine the effects trauma like that would have, and Betty kidnapping her isn't going to help matters.

It makes sense Alice wants to forget the past right now. Hopefully, she'll be able to comb through the dark memories and keep the good at some point.

Cheering Squad - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18

Archie and Veronica had a lingering romantic moment after she helped him get into the boxing tournament. Do you think they'll reignite their relationship?

Brandon: I really hope not. It's been a breath of fresh air having them not be together and explore relationships with other people. Having them reconcile this soon would be a waste of all the progress both characters have made as individuals.

Yet, I wouldn't put it past Riverdale to just put them back together simply because it's the easy thing to do.

Rematch - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18

Becca: Yes. Veronica hasn't let go of her feelings for Archie.

Josie and Archie's relationship isn't going to last much longer. Once it's over, Archie isn't someone who waits very long before pursuing another romance.

Weight - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18

Kat: That looks like the plan. Which is fine, honestly. It makes sense: Archie and Veronica, two of the show's big name characters.

It's just unfortunate this all had to happen before Josie left. Why not at least wait a beat until she inevitably leaves Riverdale in the next episode? What would be wrong with allowing Archie to be 100% faithful to the girl who helped him find his way back to himself?

Just seems like it's undermining Josie's character a little. But, a romantic reconciliation seems inevitable at this point. Whether or not it will last, who knows.

Gym Hero - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18

Jellybean is under the clutches of The Gargoyle King. React!

Brandon: At this point, it's hard to react at all to anything involving The Gargoyle King.

There have been way too many teases about who it is that I don't really care at this point, and the intrigue I have has all but dissipated at this point.

Perhaps Jellybean will start to play a more significant role on Riverdale now, which is really the only highlight from this whole scenario.

Becca: The Gargoyle King has done gruesome things to previous victims, but I'm feeling confident Jellybean will come out of this physically unscathed. Riverdale isn't as daring in its storytelling choices as it wants us to believe, and killing her off would cause the non-G&G plotlines to grind to a halt.

I'm looking forward to seeing how/if the Joneses work together to get Jellybean back. I hope Riverdale Season 3 Episode 19 gives us a clear answer on whether or not Gladys' drug operation is completely separate or connected to The Gargoyle King.

Sparks Between Exes - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18

Kat: I think having The Gargoyle King take Jellybean definitely upped the stakes, but couldn't we just let this storyline die?

I thought we were coming to an end of everything with the GK and moving focus to The Farm, which is a way more interesting arc in my opinion. Kurtz is a terrifying character, but I just don't see how, after all these chapters, the reveal of the true GK is going to be a worthwhile payoff.

Challenger - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18

Toni is undercover at The Farm. What do you think she'll discover behind enemy lines?

Brandon: It would be great if Toni actually discovered some sort of clue, but I'm worried just like Cheryl, she's going to fall under their trap. Besides Betty, Toni seems like the only other person strong enough to not fall for their trap.

It would be great if she found out what Cheryl's really seeing when she claims to be seeing Jason. That would give both something she and Betty could work within their quest to take down The Farm.

Girlfriends Unite - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 18

Becca: I think she will discover The Farm is drugging people.

Toni: Evelyn, what are you doing?
Evelyn: Toni, you’re detracting Cheryl from her studies at The Farm. But, I’m not going to let you ruin her.
Toni: Ruin her? B****, I love her, and she loves me.
Evelyn: The Farm is fulfilling Cheryl in ways you can’t even begin to imagine.
[Toni slowly walks to Evelyn]
Toni: I find that hard to believe.

Kat: I think she will dig into Edgar's past and find more details as to why he is the way he is, where he comes from, etc.

There is a theory Edgar is Charles, and that story honestly lines up with what he told Betty this episode. Regardless, I'm sure Toni and Betty will uncover some ugly truths together.

I'm also pretty sure the writers will try and connect everything from Riverdale Season 3 somehow. Even if it doesn't totally make sense.

Cheryl: Good morning, my dear Riverdale High constituents and comrades. A lot of you have been asking about The Farm’s student advocacy group. Well, here’s the skinny: Sign-up sheets are posted throughout the school; the club is open to all students. Where the one becomes many, and the many becomes one. So, uncap those pens, sharpen those pencils, and sign up. A little birdie told me it’s what all the cool kids are doing
