FBI has only been on the air for a few months, but CBS knows a hit when it has one.
The Eye network is already working on a spinoff of the popular freshman drama series, and the pilot will air in the coming months as a backdoor pilot, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
The same report states that there's a major commitment attached to it and that CBS would have to fork out a lot of money to Dick Wolf and Universal Television.
FBI: Most Wanted will focus on the department of the FBI tasked with tracking and capturing the criminals on its Most Wanted list.
It may seem premature to order a spinoff, but FBI Season 1 has been a massive hit for CBS.
Launching last fall, it quickly emerged as CBS’ biggest freshman hit. The show is currently averaging 9.3 million viewers and a 1.1 rating, ranking as the second highest-rated drama on the network behind only NCIS.
Wolf has a proven track record when it comes to creating franchises, so it was widely expected that FBI would ultimately spin off into other shows.
The current series stars Missy Peregrym, Zeeko Zaki, Jeremy Sisto, Ebonée Noel, and Sela Ward.
The news comes on the heels of FBI snagging an early renewal for a second season along with fellow newbies Magnum P.I. and The Neighborhood.
“Each of these distinctive shows has made their mark in a variety of ways,” CBS entertainment president Kelly Kahl said in a statement.
“Our goals this season were to introduce new series that audiences are passionate about, add more strength to a winning schedule and create more inclusive programming.”
