Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 10 Review: Bad Day to Be a Hero

at .

Some people are full of surprises.

Who would ever have guessed Rick would be involved in an illegal poker party full of shady characters?

Who would have ever guessed he knew a guy in prison named Ice Pick?!

Rick learned a hard lesson on Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 10 about getting involved in things he shouldn't have, but he did it for love even if his love wasn't returned in the end.

Ready for Action - Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 10

I was absolutely convinced that Toni was involved in the robbery. She seemed like the most likely culprit even before all the evidence was uncovered.

Magnum had his suspicions, too, which didn't make Rick very happy, but it was interesting that he ended up asking Toni later if she was involved.

Rick might have been in love with the woman, but he's been friends with Magnum too long and trusts him too much to not at least give consideration to his suspicions.

He was definitely relieved when Toni wasn't involved, but after that short interaction, Toni wasn't really a part of the story anymore until the end.

It was odd.

I fully expected him to have more interactions with her since it seemed that this potential relationship was going to be the focus of the hour.

It was surprising that it turned into something completely different with the team discovering that one of the poker partygoers was a slave trader which in turn provided the team with another opportunity to save the day.

If Toni wasn't the person behind the robbery, the next suspect would have been the mob boss who wanted his money when he wanted his money like every other mob boss before him.

Slave trader Chang came out of left field but the chase to find the true culprit did provide some entertaining moments.

Higgins and Magnum pretending to be a married couple in order to pull hotel files was great, and Higgins' American accent was a lot of fun.

The best part was when Magnum called Higgins up to ask her if she'd be his wife.

I wish they would have shown the expression on her face. I bet it was priceless!

She obviously didn't put up a fight about it, either, because they were Mr. and Mrs. in no time.

TC got an opportunity to shine, too. He was at Magnum's side during every aspect of the investigation even commenting at one point how exhausting it was to be a private investigator.

And all of them got a chance to flex their muscles when they boarded the slave ship and proceeded to kick some major butt -- even Katsumoto got in on the action.

There were some things that bothered me about this hour, though.

When Chang was in the interrogation room, he gave in a bit too easy when Katsumoto pressed him for information about where the boat was headed.

Not only that, Katsumoto engaged in some questionable police behavior when he threatened Chang's wife and kids.

When Chang asked for a lawyer, that should have been the end of the conversation.

I know it's a TV show, and maybe Katsumoto's behavior is a more accurate reflection of how things really go down in interrogation rooms, but Katsumoto is supposed to be one of the good guys.

On the Job - Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 10

I also question Magnum letting Charlie Banks go free after he learned about the Ranger connection.

Banks wasn't the one who murdered his two friends, but will Magnum always give a break to guys (or gals) who might be a military brother or sister?

The look Magnum and TC gave each other after learning the two dead guys were ex-military made it seem like being part of the military automatically excused bad behavior.

It's not that I thought Banks shouldn't have been given a break -- I'm all for giving people breaks -- but had Banks not had the military connection he had would Magnum have let him go as he did?

Still, the turn of events did open the door for Magnum and Katsumoto to become heroes together (along with the rest of the team) when they saved all those people from a horrible fate.

And Katsumoto joining them all for a celebratory beer afterward was a defining moment in Katsumoto's relationship with Magnum.

Katsumoto is starting to realize that Magnum is much more of an asset than an enemy, and, who knows, he just might end up being a good friend at some point.
