Magnum P.I. is back, and what a wild and fun ride it is!
The original Magnum is near and dear to my heart, and I had my doubts about this reboot from Eric Guggenheim and Peter M. Lenkov, but Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 1 is a worthy successor.
I'll be making a date with Magnum and friends every Monday night.
There's no point in making comparisons between the Tom Selleck classic from the 80s and the new Jay Hernandez fronted series of now because it wouldn't be fair.
The story is pretty much the same, but changes have been made that are -- dare I say -- refreshing for a series set in modern times.
One of the most significant changes is that Magnum doesn't sport a mustache, and I'm good with that. Only Tom Selleck can pull off a Tom Selleck mustache, so let's leave that there.
The other big change is that Higgins is now Juliet Higgins, a former MI6 agent, who kicks some major ass and is already a favorite.
Her dynamic with Magnum is phenomenal and what's really great is how quick she is to jump in and help Magnum on his case.
She may not be an "official" part of the team, but she's part of the team, and Magnum will end up needing her more than he realizes. She is MI6, after all, and has many contacts -- and talents -- that he'll find useful in whatever cases come his way.
As majordomo of Robin's estate, she has no problems letting Magnum know who's boss (it's her AND the Dobermans), but it's obvious she has a soft spot for the private investigator.
Whether this turns into a romance is up in the air at this point, but to say there isn't a vibe going on between those two would be a faulty observation.
There is a MAJOR vibe happening -- the way she looked at the picture of him and his team on the wall in Sebastian's office and how she was admiring him as he was talking to Sebastian's son are all signs that we're going to be headed down that road.
It's not going to be an easy romance for Magnum. Higgins is tough, independent, and can hold her own (did you notice how she barely flinched after getting shot by those two bad guys? AND she took an Uber to the hospital. Love it!)
She's far from a damsel in distress and doesn't need him to come to her rescue.
He's going to have to work hard to prove he's worthy of her when the time comes, but I'm all in -- no matter how long it takes.
Besides Higgins, Magnum has his other two friends, TC and Rick, both of whom served with him in Afghanistan and were also POWs, to help him with his cases.
There's a rich history between them that they delved into only briefly, and even if Robin's version of events was embellished quite a bit in the opening sequence, it's clear that that the three have an extraordinarily strong bond.
I love that they trust Magnum enough not to question him or his methods. They jump right in, no questions asked.
It's not blind faith. It's just having the experience of being with him in war. They had to rely on each other in stressful and dangerous situations. It's an unbreakable bond that will last a lifetime.
They worked together seamlessly to solve the murder of their other brother, Sebastian, and while it was a personal case for them all, it showcased how well they work together and how they have each other's backs.
There were a lot of fun elements to this premiere than just solving a murder case that should make anyone watching want to come back and see more.
It was awesome when Magnum was trying out Robin's fantasy car chase scene in real life. I love that he decided to try it even if didn't work. It's too bad for the vintage Ferrari (yes, I do believe that car was a nod to OG Magnum), but it was a great scene nonetheless.
And Magnum using a shot of Zeus and Apollo attacking him as his cell phone screensaver (along with a dog barking ring tone for Higgins) was hilarious.
If this is just the beginning of all of Magnum's new adventures, I can't wait to see what's next.
Over to you!
