On How to Get Away with Murder Season 5 Episode 1, Annalise and the Keating 4 are back at Middleton! The show dives right back in where we left off last spring with our core group of characters, ready for more.
In true HTGAWM fashion, we're given a quick flashforward (and treated to a part at the beginning and end of the episode) that disappointingly doesn't reveal as much as we could've gotten.
However, we're given several clues -- Laurel's baby, the wedding, and Bonnie. Who does Bonnie want to kill? Does this have anything to do with Gabriel?
Speaking about Gabriel, it looks like a fan theory from the end of Season 4 was correct! Gabriel is, in fact, Bonnie's son -- and boy, that creates drama.
Who was Frank talking on the phone with at the end of Season 4? How much does he know and why? Why is he so interested in Gabriel? We're presented with more questions than answers.
However, it's very much in a Season 1-style where we get the Keating 4 back in action in the classroom, albeit now with Asher cut and out for vengeance.
You want to be a better man? Then stop hating who you are and be a better Frank.Annalise
Asher has also taken a particularly interesting stance on Simon, who's undocumented and gay. Despite all this, Asher also seems angry at Micaela -- so why is defending Simon? Is there something that Asher has been hiding from the team?
As Annalise said, Asher has played the clown for far too long. Maybe this will make him an antagonist in the coming episodes. However, it's probably more likely that Gabriel will cause conflict.
Frank will most likely have to deal with the fallout from Laurel and Bonnie's misadventures. Laurel is really sketchy about what happened with her mother, but Frank is also kneedeep into some mysterious business regarding Bonnie and Gabriel.
Micaela: I want to sound casual and breezy!
Laurel: So exactly how you don't sound right now.
It's unclear as of now why Gabriel is so interested in Annalise. Is he just a good law student, or does he know something about Bonnie that led him to Annalise?
Frank might also cause some undue tension in the team now that Laurel rejected his proposal and he has business with Gabriel. There are a lot of plotlines flying around right now, and they are going to have to all tie together somehow.
Did anybody catch that look from Tegan after Annalise gets her deal with Caplan and Gold? Is she up to something, or does she have some business with Annalise?
Laurel: He loves Christopher.
Micaela: And the sex.
Micaela: Was that a secret?
Why is Frank looking up Gabriel's criminal record? It's an incredible liability to have all that information lying around -- and Frank isn't afraid to use it to get what he wants.
When Frank confronts Gabriel during basketball, it looks like Frank just wants to scope him out rather than doing anything with him. However, Frank is clearly on a mission.
It's tough to assess the effectiveness of an episode like this on a show like this given that the entire episode throws out questions that will hopefully be answered by the end of the season.
The flashforward is thankfully intriguing enough, and Bonnie has already been tied with Gabriel in an intriguing way. The show continues to dream up bizarre and shocking new twists, even if it hasn't had the best luck in wrapping up every storyline.
What is Nate's endgame now? Is he just trying to figure out the truth behind Bonnie's child, or is there something more sinister at play? He's clearly keeping this a closely guarded secret.
There are a lot of characters being thrown into the fray, so I'm glad Marcus wasn't brought back. This will drive Micaela into her work, for better or for worse, but maybe that will give Asher a reason to move on (but on to what?).
Why do you look like someone just died?Annalise (to Frank)
Viola Davis wasn't given that much time to shine this episode, but she still played Annalise well especially in those legal clinic scenes. Plus, +1 points for Annalise's dance scene at the wedding.
Now that we know that Connor and Oliver's wedding is the endpoint, be on the lookout for clues surrounding attendance, Laurel's kid, and Bonnie that will allow us to solve the mystery.
That's the best part of HTGAWM being back -- we get to ponder the mystery for a solid few weeks.
