Timeless has cheated death once again.
NBC has placed an order for a two-hour series finale that will give closure to fans of the time travel drama.
No air date has been announced, but it is said to premiere during the holidays.
“While we wish we could’ve made another dozen seasons ofTimeless, this is the next best thing,” said executive producers Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke in a joint statement.
“We’re thrilled to take the Lifeboat out for one last spin and bring closure to our story. The studio, network, cast and crew are all doing this for one reason only: the fans."
"Because they deserve it. Because the fans made this happen and we thank them for their passion, support and helicopters. So? You guys want to get Rufus back or what?”
“We’re excited to tell one final chapter to this incredible story,” said NBC Entertainment co-president of scripted programming Lisa Katz.
“A huge thank you to all — our cast, crew, producers and partners at Sony — who have worked so very hard, and to the fans who kept us on our toes and made sure we did our very best week after week.”
Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, Goran Višnjić, Paterson Joseph, Sakina Jaffrey and Claudia Doumit are all slated to appear in the finale.
The news comes a month after NBC decided to swing the ax on the popular series after two seasons, but there was a glimmer of hope that a finale special could see the light of day.
"This is a sad day for the writers, actors, crew and especially the viewers of Timeless,” co-showrunner Shawn Ryan shared on Twitter when the show was canceled.
“We are all extremely proud of what we made and know that it was more than just a show for so many of our fans. It became a passion and a cause for many of them."
“If NBC is sincere in wanting a two-hour movie to give much needed closure to our amazing @NBCTimeless fans, we are ready to make it,” he added. “We don’t want the journeys of Lucy, Wyatt, Rufus and the others to end yet.”
Thankfully, we now know that the movie will become a reality and that fans will get an ending.
This news also marks the second time NBC has saved the series after canceling it.
While the show was canceled, it still had a huge presence at San Diego Comic-Con. Fans donated money to have a helicopter fly a banner urging other outlets to pick up the series.
Netflix has been one of the destinations eyed as a potential home for the series, but Cindy Holland confirmed at Netflix's TCA event last Sunday that there were no plans to bring the series back.
"To be honest, I'm not aware of any real conversations about Timeless," she said.
Okay, Timeless Fanatics! We may not be getting another season, but at least we know there will be closure!
