John Goodman is in-demand.
The series focuses on the “heir to the throne” of a world-famous televangelist family “with a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work, all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,” according to the official logline.
The "heir" we're talking about here is named Jesse and is played by Danny McBride, who created the project. McBride will also serve as the director and executive producer on the pilot.
Goodman is on board as Eli Gemstone, the patriarch of the family, who is “known the world over for his aggressive salvation techniques, his worldwide ministries, and his award-winning weekly television program.”
Jesse “fancies himself a maverick in the ministry game, taking what Eli has built and expanding it for a more modern audience.”
The news comes just over a week after ABC decided to keep characters from Roseanne alive by way of a spinoff titled The Conners.
The network canceled Roseanne last month, despite it being the number one show on television. The reason for the cancelation was down to series lead, Roseanne Barr making a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett.
Barr apologized in the aftermath but appeared to blame Ambien for her actions. It even prompted the pharmaceutical company who produces the drug in the U.S. to come forward and claim that the drug does not cause racism.
The good news for Roseanne fans is that the cast will return for the spinoff without leading lady, Barr.
As for what it means for Goodman's tenure on The Conners, not much. It is likely that Goodman will appear on both series.
It's difficult enough to imagine the continuing adventures of the Conner family without Roseanne never mind Dan.
