Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Call/Response

at .  Updated at .

Tandy and Tyrone's relationship got a whole lot deeper on Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 4. Who knew the inside of an abandoned church would be the place to let out their inner thoughts?

The future Cloak and Dagger superheroes used their secluded time together to figure out the cause of their powers. But, in the process, their heart-to-heart uncovered a lot more than they realized. The truth really did set them free.

Runaway - Cloak and Dagger

Similar to Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 3, "Call/Response" changed up their structure with how it presented a pivotal moment for the lead characters.

Instead of keeping the entire church scene together in the beginning, their dialogue was interspersed throughout the hour.

Many of the moments were used to transition to different scenes in Tandy's and Tyrone's life, like Tyrone's visit to the closet and Tandy helping Greg. In other instances, their conversation dug deep into their subconscious like a makeshift therapy session.

Tandy and Tyrone were open with each other. They were real. They were raw.

The church scene might be my favorite scene from Cloak and Dagger so far. (Quite possibly, it might be one of my favorite scenes of the year.)

Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph showed off their acting chops in a series of emotionally gripping scenes. There were moments where it could've become too dramatic or cheesy, and it was going there with their not-so-subtle flirtation and longing to touch. Luckily, it never ventured into that territory.

The writing was spot on, and the editing heightened the importance of these scenes. Cloak and Dagger has continually felt like a grounded and emotionally captivating story.

Light My Candle - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 4

Having Tyrone and Tandy be fully open with each other was a good step for their character development.

Besides the few interactions in the visions, the pair is practically strangers. As compared to their friends and families, they don't need to keep secrets.

Sharing their experiences in the dream world was the perfect first step. Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 3 showcased the inner conflicts both characters faced after the oil rig explosion: Tandy's issue with her deceased father and running away, and Tyrone wanting revenge for the death of his brother.

Both motivations were driving the actions of the characters.

Tandy: My opinion and my experience: It’s dangerous to get close to anyone. But with you, I’m conclusively right. When we touch, s*** goes boom.
[Tandy starts moving forward]
Tandy: So, the first question is: How close can we get to each other without triggering our crazy?
Tyrone: And how are you gonna do that?
Tandy: Close your eyes. Don’t move. And no cheating.
[They reach for each other, hands glowing. They touch and go flying across the room]
Tyrone: That was…
Tandy: WHAT?!
Tyrone: That was… nice, at first.

Thanks to their intimate conversation in the church, they were finally able to discover the start of their powers. All of the time together was beneficial for putting the pieces together.

It was the oil rig explosion. The night their lives were forever changed, and the moment they met each other, was when they got their powers. We already knew this as viewers, but the discovery took them four episodes to realize the obvious.

The delayed realization might be one of the biggest gripes about Cloak and Dagger.

They suffered the same fault that most soap operas have experienced. We were already there in plot and knew the answer, but we had to wait for them to catch up.

On the other hand, the discovery of what powers they did receive, and the reason why, was pretty mind-blowing.

Tandy wanted to run away while Tyrone wanted revenge; the powers they received were the complete opposite of their desires. In essence, both of them received the power that the other sought after. That's quite brilliant if you think about it.

And the fact that they couldn't touch each other for fear of their powers over-reacting created a fun twist to their potential romance.

Tandy's Church - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 4

It's a shame that their time away in the church ended in a fight. For all of the scenes spent talking, they were finally coming to terms with all of the issues they had face separately. Imagine what they could've accomplished further if they didn't get into an argument.

Tyrone did have a point about Tandy, though.

She shouldn't be giving up on life and wasting any potential for the future. Her father wouldn't have wanted that for her; her committing suicide and ending it all was not the right answer. The same could be said of Tyrone.

Tandy could feel Tyrone's hatred for Connors, and his motivation to murder the cop who killed his brother. Revenge is all well and good, but there is another option to take down Connors without ruining his own life. Tyrone would be wasting everything if he killed the cop.

Both were right, but they need to realize that solution before making a reckless decision. If they don't stop, they're going to get into deep trouble.

Tandy: I don’t know what you gotta be so afraid of. You seem strong, wily, and honest. Maybe that’s what’s wrong with you? You’re probably too honest.
Tyrone: Is there such a thing?
Tandy: There is! But, it hangs off your shoulders nicely.
Tyrone: I don’t think you live here by accident.
Tandy: What do you mean?
Tyrone: I think you believe in hope.
Tandy: What?
Tyrone: Yeah, you should. I think you should. You’re smart, and you know how to live in this world. You know, it’s not nothing. And it’s not ironic. You and hope.
[She laughs]
Tandy: What are we gonna do, Tyrone Johnson?
Tyrone: I don’t know, Tandy Bowen. The universe keeps pushing us together.
Tandy: The universe keeps pulling us apart. Anyway, it’s nice to have someone to talk to.

Tyrone's mission to get closer to Connors was plagued by difficulties. What did he expect would happen when he was face-to-face with his brother's killer?

Did he plan to murder him right then and there? Would he cause a scene? Would he reveal that he knows the truth about the murder?

Many questions were up in the air about his big goal beyond getting revenge.

It almost seemed like Tyrone didn't have a plan in place. He just wanted to get in front of his brother's killer after his chat with Tandy and see what would happen. It was a brash move that could blow up in his face.

Bending The Truth - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 4

Tandy wasn't the only person who developed a deeper relationship with Tyrone. We learned a lot about his father, Otis Johnson, during their trip to meet with the men from his past. Not even Tyrone knew these details about Otis.

Not much was shown about his father before now. He seemed like any other busy, mild-mannered individual. However, their trip to the trailer explained a lot about his past and what that meant for Tyrone.

The most illuminating part of their day together was the discussion about beadwork.

Otis: Each bead has its place, part of a larger design. And you gotta pay attention because if you mess up, and you don’t notice till later, you gotta undo hours… days… even months of work. It’s no joke. It takes years to master the art of beadwork, and each year you gotta remaster it again.
Tyrone: You gotta make a new one every year?
Otis: Now every year you’re a new person, Son. So, we spend that time working on a new suit. Some give up and never finish. There’s a room over there full of failure stories; it would drive a man crazy. But not the man with patience, diligence, and grace. Control of your actions, Son. If you can’t control yourself, then you can’t control a damn thing in this world. This regalia… it helps us find that control and with it comes the strength we need.
[Tyrone search through the room and finds a black cloak]

Sure, they were talking about beads and sewing, but it had a deeper meaning in the context of life. Otis gave Tyrone the advice he needed to hear; unfortunately, his son didn't take the proper meaning from it.

Hopefully, when he finishes his brother's cloak, he'll stop himself from doing something terrible.

Origins - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 4

In Tandy's case, things were finally starting to turn around for her. She was opening up more to her mother, and she was giving Greg a chance once she realized he was genuine. (Thankfully her powers were able to help her this once.)

There was some normalcy in her life. She started to believe in hope. Though this is Cloak and Dagger we're talking about, the tone doesn't stay calm for too long.

We knew previously Greg was married and that he was cheating on his wife with Melissa. Tandy threw that tidbit every chance she got to put her mother in her place. We didn't know to what extent the situation was between them, except that he was helping Melissa with the Roxxon case.

They possibly could've had a life together had it not been for his murder. (And if Melissa had not broken up with him before his death.)

Tandy: Hey! Preparing for that job interview?
Melissa: We both know there isn’t one.
Tandy: I think you were right.
Melissa: About what?
Tandy: About Greg. He’s a nice guy, he’s not an idiot. He’s working his ass off on this case for you.
Melissa: Tandy! You were right the first time. He is just like the rest of them.
Tandy: Mom, I don’t think that’s true.
Melissa: Well, it doesn’t really matter what you think. I just broke up with him.

While I wasn't the biggest fan of Greg's when he first appeared, he started to grow on me. Though, in hindsight, he was getting the hero edit for a sad goodbye. His progression was all about being there for Melissa and Tandy, and the three of them starting a life together as a family.

Greg's image completely changed. And, because of that, he needed to go to push Tandy into finding out the truth about Roxxon Corp.

Greg's death and Tandy finding the courage to save herself from her suicide attempt could be the trigger for her to go after the people who ruined her life.

Heart-To-Heart - Cloak and Dagger Season 1 Episode 4

What did you think of "Call/Response"? Did you like the chemistry between Tandy and Tyrone in the church? What will Tyrone do now that he's asked to see Connors? Are you sad to see Greg go?
