Per the official logline:

After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life.

She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.

This new entry in the franchise will be based on the book written by Melinda Metz.

Jeanine Mason (Grey's Anatomy), Nathan Parsons (The Originals), Lily Cowles (Brain Dead), Michael Vlamis (New Girl), Heather Hemmens (Hellcats), Michael Trevino (The Vampire Diaries) and Trevor St. John (Containment) are attached to star.

The series comes from The Originals duo Carina Adly Mackenzie and Julie Plec. It was first announced back in January, and there was a mixed response.

The original series failed to garner much of an audience and was canceled twice, ultimately lasting just three seasons. With a raft of changes, this new iteration could succeed, but it all depends on the execution of it.

It's unclear where The CW plans to slot the series on its schedule, but given that it plans to expand to six nights of programming in the fall, there are a lot of options.

The network has a good track record with reboots, with the most recent of which being Dynasty. It was not a big success, but it managed to turn in a profit thanks to a worldwide Netflix distribution deal.
