Black Lightning Season 1 Episode 5 Review: And Then the Devil Brought the Plague: The Book of Green Light

How long will it take for Anissa to swoop in and give Black Lightning a rest?

That thought crossed my mind several times while watching Black Lightning Season 1 Episode 5, which found the titular hero struggling with the drawbacks of being a superhero.

We already know that this isn't Jefferson's first rodeo, but he needs to stop and take a long hard look at himself and establish some ground rules to stay healthy.

What's Going On? - Black Lightning Season 1 Episode 5

We don't know all the details about what really happens to the body with all that electricity whizzing around, but we do know that Jefferson has found himself immobile in the past.

If you watch Black Lightning online, you will know that's why Lynn has worried about him going out on the streets of Freeland trying to keep everyone safe.

Watching Jefferson struggle physically is tough because it's evident he's trying to fight through the pain. Watching him when he's not strong enough to dispatch of the villains is heartbreaking.

Tobias would love nothing more than to hear all about it. Given that Tobias has been on the outs with his allies because he was supposed to murder Black Lightning all those years ago, Black Lightning's weakness will be music to his ears.

The insight into Tobias' life as a child was needed. Now we know why the bond between him and his sister is so strong. Their father was awful, and while he was no saint to Tori, he treated Tobias the worst.

That's why it was fun to watch the father's reaction as his scorned children appeared on his doorstep. Drunk or not, there was no excuse for the way the man treated his children.

It remains to be seen what, exactly Tobias and Tori have planned for their father, and I think it's fair to say the man is going to wish he had never crossed his children.

I had to laugh at him saying he was still in the same place. He may not have run off, but he sure as hell did not make them feel like part of a family.

That said, I'm not entirely sure both siblings will be loyal to each other in the long run. They met up again only recently, and they already struggled to get on the same page about what to do about Black Lightning.

If they continue to have differing opinions, it would not surprise me if they started to make their own side deals with the other criminals in town. That's if the show wants to put the siblings against each other.

Time will tell.

Anissa is one of the most relentless people in the world. I'll be honest; I initially rolled my eyes at the video. It was far too cheesy to take seriously. The reveal that Anissa's grandfather died after starting to report on people with powers was awesome. It pulled the rug from under me.

I love a good conspiracy, and Anissa sleuthing and fighting her way to the truth was the best foot forward. That has the potential to take up the bulk of the storyline for the rest of Black Lightning Season 1

It could also be what makes Anissa and Black Lightning meet up for the first time. The slow burn with Anissa is engaging, but I'm yearning for the father and daughter to join forces and kick some ass.

With that, there's also a glimmer of hope that Jennifer could be following in the footsteps of her father and sister. Those girls were awful to her at the roller disco.

Yes, Jennifer shouldn't have led the charge with her hands, but two on one in a fight is not fair. Jennifer is sassy, but she's not the type of person to let people bully her.

Jefferson raised her as such, and that's why it was difficult for the teenager to accept her punishment. Despite being grounded, Jefferson was secretly proud of her.

In Lynn's defense, she's already worried sick about what's going on with her ex-husband. She's scared she gets a phone call to learn that he's been overpowered and murdered.

That's a lot to have on your mind, and I'm dreading the day she finds out about Anissa. That's not going to go down well.

"The Book of Green Light" successfully upped the ante for the characters on this freshman CW series. It continues to set itself apart from the other DC TV series on the network.

It's fresh, thrilling and brutal. It's everything you would expect from a superhero series and then some.

Black Lightning Season 1 Episode 5 Quotes

Jefferson: Are you sure about this?
Gambi: In theory.
Jefferson: That's not the vote of confidence I was looking for.

Jefferson: What the hell were you thinking?
Jennifer: Okay, look. It wasn't my fault.
Lynn: It doesn't matter whose fault it was. Did you not see the cast on her wrist?
