The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Moves from CW to Netflix

A few months ago, it was reported that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was in the works at The CW

It was widely speculated that the series would make the cut on the network's schedule due to the success of Riverdale.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will no longer land at The CW and will instead launch on Netflix. Even better, the streaming giant has gifted the series with a two-season order.

Yes, that means the show has garnered a straight-to-series order. It sure sounds like executives liked the concept of the series if they are so generous with the episode order.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be based on the graphic novel of the same name, and it was seen as a companion series for Riverdale, which returned earlier this year to record ratings.

Riverdale showrunner, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, wrote the script for the pilot episode of the series and casting was allegedly underway for someone to take on the role of Sabrina before the show moved to Netflix.

The series will focus on Sabrina as she tries to navigate her life as a half witch, half mortal who is trying to grow up in unity, but finds herself fighting to protect herself, her friends and family from the forces of evil.

Given that Riverdale is billed as a Netflix original in territories outside of the United States, this decision makes sense. The streaming numbers on Netflix have apparently been outstanding.

The streaming giant likely took note of this and realized that it would make sense to take the series on without the involvement of The CW.

It's unclear, however, whether the show will be linked to Riverdale in any way. Riverdale has taken several trips to Greendale, where Sabrina is from, but the character has never been addressed.

Netflix is garnering quite the track record for taking on CW shows that do not make it to the air. Earlier this year, the company took on Insatiable with a series order after CW passed it on.

Riverdale Quotes

Cheryl: Well, well, well. Stop the presses! The Riverdale rag finally reported a story accurately. Not only is there going to some hideous janky parade snaking its way through town, you four are the architects of this outrage.
Veronica: What’s your problem, Cheryl?
Cheryl: My problem, Veronica, is that the Fourth of July is a day of tragedy for Riverdale. Not celebration. Or have you forgotten what happened to my poor brother Jason?
Betty: Cheryl, Riverdale hasn’t held a parade out of respect for what happened to your brother in like years. It’s time.
Jughead: I mean, you don’t have to come.
Cheryl: Oh, I’ll be there, Insufferable Smurf. Front and center. With a sign of protest in one hand and a horn of compressed air to silence any revelry in the other.

Kevin: Okay, Veronica, I’m obsessed with everything that just happened.
Veronica: Thank you! It helps to be off-book and in full costume.
Betty: Don’t be so modest, you are the literally embodiment of Chris. Never has a role been perfectly typecast.
Archie: Betty!
Veronica: What was that, Betty?
Betty: I mean think about it: Spoiled rich girl, check. Major daddy issues, check. Bad to the bone, trying to control everyone around her, including her boyfriend and best friend. Check, check, check.
