The Flash Season 4 Episode 5 Review: Girls Night Out

at . Comments

The latest chapter of The Flash was all about parties for Barry and Iris as they celebrate their coming wedding. But Caitlin has some trouble to deal with when she lets Amunet Black into her life.

The theme of The Flash Season 4 Episode 5 was girl power as the women of Team Flash got to kick some ass. This is something I've been waiting for quite some time now.

Behold The Blacksmith - The Flash Season 4 Episode 5

One of the few problems with The Flash has been the sidelining of the female characters in the majority of past seasons. But "Girls Night Out" finally gave us a fun adventure where the ladies got the spotlight.

But what was a surprise was the fact that it didn't feel like the men got sidelined in their place. This is what I would want to see the show do more off where they can balance the characters equally.

Perhaps "Girls Night Out" is a sign that we'll see more of that in coming episodes. I didn't mind the fact that there wasn't any costumes or traditional superhero action for once.

The Flash gets away with it as they don't do it like Arrow where, currently, Oliver isn't the Green Arrow anymore. It also helped that the comedic beat continued to keep up with the light tone of that The Flash Season 4 has been on.

Katee Sackhoff made her debut as the DC villain Amunet Black who was one of the highlights of this episode. The Flash has had its hit and misses when it comes to female villains, but luckily Amunet was a hit.

Killer Frost In Trouble - The Flash Season 4 Episode 5

She feels like a true force to be reckoned with which makes sense because that is what Sackhoff is in real life. While I know Amunet more for her status as one of the Rogues in the DC lore, I dig the idea that Caitlin has her own big bad.

It reminds me how The Flash initially portrayed Hartley Rathaway/Pied Piper in the earlier seasons with Cisco. Not that it counts anymore since Barry went back in time and voila, Hartley is a good guy now.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of Amunet as the season progresses. Sackhoff is without doubt one of the show's best casting choices so major points for her role in "Girls Night Out."

Speaking of the girl power, Caitlin and Iris were the MVPs in this adventure. Something that I've had issues with The Flash for multiple seasons now is the lack of bonding between these two women.

It was also a blast having Arrow's Felicity Smoak visit too as she always fits in with The Flash whenever she guests. Ideally, this won't be the last time we see the women of Team Flash getting to save the day.

Girl Power - The Flash Season 4 Episode 5

They are both on Team Flash; they don't have any bad history between them. But yet they have never gotten a chance to develop as friends and remained more as team allies.

I didn't expect the episode to go so meta and acknowledge this, but I'm proud of the writers for doing that. If shows like Riverdale and Supergirl can have their female characters bond and interact then so can The Flash.

One can only hope that we continue to see their friendship develop. The thing that makes me nervous about their chances is the Killer Frost of it all.

But at least the team finally knows what's going on with Caitlin. It didn't shock me that Julian's (remember him?) cure didn't help after all. Heck, it never made sense to me even in May how he was able to develop it that fast.

Despite that this is Barry Allen's show, I choose to believe that it should be possible to have girl power adventures more often. But only time will tell if we do get to see that again in the future.

Speedster Gets Wasted - The Flash Season 4 Episode 5

There is no way I'm forgetting the craziness that the boys were up to. First of all, we need another event where Barry gets crazy drunk with Oliver. Picture that bromance drunk and having the time of their lives.

Ralph continues to grow on me, even though I could do it without his flirtatious side. Then again this is part of his character development as he goes from being this bro-dude into a hero.

The story with the men was merely entertaining but particularly for Barry and Cisco. I will admit that the darkness from The Flash Season 3 still has a taste in my mouth. That's probably why I've been able to enjoy the light-hearted tone this much.

Although the one thing that I couldn't wrap my head around was Harry. Is it not a thing anymore that Harrison Wells on this Earth was outed as Nora Allen's murderer?

Because it was bizarre that Harry didn't do anything to try and disguise himself a little bit. It was my only nitpick as it didn't take away anything from the quality of the episode.

Boys In Trouble - The Flash Season 4 Episode 5

The weeping-metahuman didn't do much for me other than the final scene with DeVoe. I keep expecting that they're going to jump the gun and have him play his cards too soon.

But luckily that hasn't happened, and I appreciate that they're building him up. Although it wouldn't be harmful if they began to show us his motives a little bit.

Overall, "Girls Night Out" was another strong hour of the new season. The women got to kick ass and bond while the men were being men which I mean with love.

The Iris and Caitlin scenes became the best aspect of the whole episode. For those who may not be aware, the girl power wasn't only on-screen as there was some kick-ass girl power behind the camera too.

"Girls Night Out" was written Kristen Kim and Lauren Certo with Laura Belsey directing it. It's only a bonus whenever we see women highly featured on TV both in front and behind the camera.

Now it's your turn to let us know what you thought of The Flash Season 4 Episode 5! Did you love Katee Sackhoff's introduction as Amunet Black?

What did you think of the parties? Are you enjoying the continuous development between Iris and Caitlin as friends?

Do you want to see drunk Barry again? What is DeVoe up to?

Cisco: Hey, Sad Flash, why the face?
Barry: Nothing, I just...I just love chicken wings so much.

Felicity: Hey!
Barry: Woah, Felicity! How did you get in here?
Felicity: I literally walked in here, you have no security! You have no alarms, you have nothing on your door. You guys might want to consider something, anything at all!
