The Blacklist Season 5 Episode 8 Review: Ian Garvey

Have you recovered yet? Because I haven't, and I don't think I ever will.

The Blacklist Season 5 Episode 8 was brutal, emotional and devastating. There are a lot of fans out there who hated Tom Keen and are probably celebrating, but I'm not one of them.

Tom's Last Stand - The Blacklist Season 5 Episode 8

I'll never be able to listen to Sounds of Silence again without thinking about that entire Tom and Liz sequence.

The two of them near death in the back of the car with Red watching and listening to them tell each other to never let Agnes forget them because they both thought they were going to die was almost more than I could handle.

The look on Red's face spoke volumes. It was a dire situation, and Red was helpless to do anything but try to get them to the hospital in time. Red could fix anything, but he couldn't fix this.

And if you weren't already bawling, Dembe grabbing Red's hand to comfort him should have crushed you even further.

Despite Red and Dembe getting to the apartment before the bald guy's crew got down to killing, it was already too late for Tom.

Ian Garvey was ruthless, and I hope Red found him and ripped his guts out. We still don't know anything about him, or why he was so interested in the bones, but he deserves every form of torture available.

Why didn't Tom think Garvey would go to the apartment looking for him or something to use against him? At least Tom called Liz in time to get Agnes out of there before Garvey and crew arrived. Had Agnes and the babysitter still been at the apartment, it would have been gruesome.

The Car of Death - The Blacklist Season 5 Episode 8

There's no doubt in my mind that Garvey would have killed Agnes without a second thought. The guy put a dead girl into a wood chipper, why would he care about an innocent baby?

When Liz walked into the apartment and saw Tom tied up with duct tape on his mouth, it was so reminiscent of that episode on The Blacklist Season 1 when Liz came home to find Tom in the dining room barely hanging on because of what Anslo Garrick did to him.

Tom wasn't in that bad of shape this time, but it didn't last because Garvey had no more use for him and stabbed him in the gut. It didn't kill Tom, not yet, but it was what ended up killing him. And hearing that knife go into Tom over and over was nearly unbearable.

Liz watched it all even as she was bleeding out from the wound on her head, and there was nothing she could do to stop any part of the nightmare.

But Tom still had life left in him, and he wasn't going to watch the woman he loved get murdered by a bunch of goons. He was going to do everything he could to save her even if he died doing it.

While I thought for the longest time that it was going to be Red who killed Tom, it turned out that was never his intention — ever, and that made his death even more heart-wrenching.

Tom is Dead - The Blacklist Season 5 Episode 8

Red may have only tolerated Tom, but he cared for him more than anyone could have imagined. Tom made Liz happy and Red recognized that from the very beginning. He would never do anything to take away from Liz's happiness no matter how much he may have thought Tom was the wrong choice for his daughter.

Tom was surprised at the revelations, but that didn't stop him from stealing the bones and taking off.

It was a stupid move on Tom's part, and it was annoying that he did that to Red and Dembe, but, then again, if Red would have just told him the truth about the bones, there might have been a happier ending.

Dembe wanted Red to tell the truth, but Red was afraid, and that fear was a contributing factor to Tom's death. If he would have told Tom, all this mess could have been avoided. There wouldn't be any heartbreak. The three of them would have survived. But now Red is going to have to carry this guilt around with him forever.

He almost lost Liz because of the damn bones, and he's going to have to pick up the pieces of her broken heart because of Tom's death.

Happier Times - The Blacklist Season 5 Episode 8

Her happiness has been shattered, and she'll never recover from it. Losing someone in such a tragic way will haunt her for the rest of her life. She'll relive that day in her mind over and over wondering if there was something she could have done differently, wondering if she was at fault for anything, and feeling guilty for being the one that survived.

It's not going to be easy, and I'm not sure Red will ever be able to console her.

Even though I saw it coming and even after all the words I just wrote, I still can't wrap my head around the fact that Tom Keen is dead. At least he died a hero's death so that's something, but it's still hard to swallow.

Tom Keen didn't deserve all the hate he got. He and Liz were a team. As toxic as their relationship was at times, they belonged together. They were soulmates.

Searching For Tom - The Blacklist

I know that it's all about Red and Liz, but Tom rounded Liz out. He gave her life outside of her job. He added a dimension to the show that's gone forever.

Liz doesn't belong with anyone else so I hope there isn't a Ressler/Liz romance around the corner. That would be an atrocity. It just can't happen.

Ryan Eggold deserves all sorts of accolades for his portrayal of Tom Keen. He played every aspect of Tom's complicated personality to perfection and the performance he gave on "Ian Garvey" was outstanding.

I don't care what anyone says, but The Blacklist is going to be empty without Tom. I'm going to miss him.

What do you guys think? Were you shocked by Tom's death? Did you bawl your eyes out like I did?

Are you glad he's gone? Sad to see him go?

Will Liz recover? Will Red ever forgive himself?
