Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1 Review: Girl of Steel

What does it mean to be human?

Kara finds herself questioning her humanity after the devastating loss of Mon-El on Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1, but has she really lost her human side?

She made the impossible decision to send the love of her life away to save the world, but was she only able to make that decision because she's an alien?

Moving On - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1

Kara may not realize it, but her behavior couldn't be more human. OK, sure, the rest of us don't go chasing bank robbers when we're grieving, but we do close ourselves off and throw ourselves into work as a distraction from the pain.

We all deal with pain and grief differently, but Kara's method is not unusual, which is why her friends and family are willing to be patient...to an extent.

Quitting her job is where her downfall starts to become destructive, and Alex is not about to let her throw her life away.

We all do things we might regret when we're hurting. Kara is lucky that James is her boss. Her job will still be there for her when she asks for it back.

Apparently, Snapper is no longer around to dole out assignments and get on her back. He was finally starting to grow on me, but James needs a bigger role at CatCo to maintain his relevancy. Hopefully, his character gets back on track this season.

Reporter: Does President Marsden believe climate change is real?
Cat: Yes, Carl, as a matter of fact she does. She also believes that two plus two equals four, and that the Earth is round, because the President is not a moron.

Big changes are coming to CatCo!

Lena is now the proud, new owner, despite the fact that she has no idea how to run a media business. Still, no one could be worse than the new guy, Morgan Edge. Though, honestly, I feel like we can just call him the "new Maxwell Lord."

Supergirl has a new human villain and billionaire to contend with, which could be interesting, or it could feel a lot like deja vu.

Wedding Bells? - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1

In case anyone was worried, Maggie accepted Alex's proposal, and wedding plans have commenced! I'm with Winn; these two are my favorite couple.

They are so open and honest with each other, and neither will let the other get away with shutting her out. It's disappointing Maggie will only be a guest star this season, but if they can keep giving us scenes like this with their limited screen time, it'll be worth it.

Being an occasional guest star is better than nothing. That same sentiment also goes for Cat Grant. We will take whatever we can get!

Here's hoping Calista Flockhart filmed several scenes acting as the White House Press Secretary because those were hilarious! It'd be great if they have a stockpile of them to sprinkle throughout the season.

Kara could have used her mentor to help her through her crisis. Cat would have gotten through to her with a rousing speech, but nothing compares to the sisterly moments between Alex and Kara.

Kara Danvers is my favorite person. She's saved me more times than Supergirl ever could. So, just think about that while you're trying to get rid of her.

Alex

Supergirl Season 2 got away from them a little bit, but their relationship is still the heart of the show.

Kara's decision to suppress her human side and focus on being Supergirl may seem like the less painful option, but despite all the people she saved, she was still hurting those closest to her.

Her friends and family felt selfish for wanting Kara to take time away from her superhero duties to spend time with them, something they probably never felt before, nor should they now.

Everyone needs a break and time to decompress. Otherwise, they get sloppy, and mistakes are made, something Supergirl does not want to risk.

James even resorted to using his emergency watch to call Kara in to write her article. It may have been a little extreme, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

We saw Kara try to throw herself into being Supergirl when she was fired by Snapper, and she learned that it wasn't enough. She needs all aspects of the life she's built to be happy and successful. Luckily it appears she's finally starting to remember that, thanks to a little help from Mon-El.

Hopefully, showing up at the bar means she's ready to embrace Kara Danvers again because one Alex is all we need.

Winn: I thought it was bad when she skipped pizza night, but skipping free apps? I mean, come on. These are like the beginning of the dark days.
J'onn: Hey, come on, grief doesn't have a deadline.
Winn: Look, I know, but I mean, she goes from being little miss sunshine to, well, Alex basically.
Alex: What? I'm not like that.
J'onn: Oh come on Alex, your unrelenting seriousness is one of your best qualities.

So, who's ready for an origin story?

Sam and Ruby - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1

We have officially been introduced to Samantha, AKA Reign, AKA the baby in the pod.

We don't know she's Reign yet, and neither does she, making this different from any other villain's story we've seen so far.

All we know at this point is she's a mother (one who honestly looks too young to have a kid that age), and she has super strength that she did not know she possessed.

She could just chalk it up to adrenaline, but this is just the start of some weird things she's going to start to discover. Watching a character become the villain, as opposed to someone arriving canvas full-on evil has the potential to be exciting.

We'll experience her motivations right along with her and most likely find ourselves sympathizing with her. I am very intrigued to see how her story develops.

Ducking Laser Guns - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1

Mon-El may be one of the most polarizing characters on TV, but it's hard not to empathize with Kara. Everyone around her is happy, her sister is getting married, and Kara has to find a way to be happy for them. That's a tough situation for anyone.

Some final thoughts:

  • For someone who can't breathe underwater, Kara sure can hold her breath for an incredibly long time.
  • It would not surprise me at all if Alex got married in Kevlar.

So what did you guys think of the premiere? Are you intrigued by Samantha? Is Morgan the new Max?

Hit the comments with your thoughts and be sure to watch Supergirl online if you need to catch up!
