Kevin (Probably) Saves the World Season 1 Episode 3 Review: Sweet Little Lies

Kevin is growing up right in front of our eyes, isn't he?

Each week it's refreshing to see Kevin evolve, as he is getting a better understanding of what it is that he's doing. Kevin (Probably) Saves the World Season 1 Episode 3 finds him tackling another tough mission.

If someone told you that you had to break up a marriage for the greater good of humanity, how would you go about that?

The Consequences - Kevin (Probably) Saves the World

Thanks to Yvette and her wealth of knowledge about weddings, Kevin befriends Deb and Ben, a married couple who are throwing themselves a large wedding some years after their official wedding.

These two have an interesting backstory, as they were childhood neighbors and it took Deb's cancer diagnosis to show Ben that she was the love of his life. Fast forward some years later, and Deb is in remission and having major doubts about wanting to spend the rest of her life with Ben.

Kevin: I'm supposed to break up this marriage, aren't I?
Yvette: Yeah. That sounds like the universe I know.
Kevin: I didn't sign up for this.
Yvette: You didn't sign up.

Both Ben and Deb seemed like really good people, which has been a trend so far. All of the people Kevin has helped have been seemingly kind, decent people. Will there ever come a day when Kevin has to help someone who isn't so great?

Once Kevin realizes that Deb wants out of the marriage, he decides the best thing to do is put Deb on the spot and make her tell Ben the truth. Clearly, this is a terrible move, but what else was he supposed to do?

There is no good way to break someone's heart, so I get why Kevin decided this was the way to go.

I also understand why Deb, feeling ambushed, just blurted out that she was having an affair with Kevin. She was put on the spot and hoping that Ben would be so enraged that he would just hate her and move on from her forever.

That is another terrible plan, but this whole situation is just an entire mess if we're honest.

The best part of this episode was Kevin's realization that even though he has essentially completed his mission (that is proven by his vision of some large masks and a mariachi band) he doesn't want to leave Deb and Ben in such a broken place.

Bringing them together on the top of the building where Ben proposed was a bit cheesy, but it was a nice moment for the two of them to acknowledge that even through everything, they were still best friends.

For me, this was a much stronger episode than Kevin (Probably) Saves The World Season 1 Episode 2, as I just enjoyed the actors and the plot. Amy also played a larger role, which is always welcome, but I'm still waiting for her to get an arc outside of worrying about Kevin.

Are we going to see more with her and the government? That will bring her more in line with Kevin, aside from just her thinking he is still at risk to hurt himself.

It is a better show when Kevin and Amy get to play off one another. I just need them to give Amy a little something more to do.

Loose Ends

  • Amy brings Kevin's therapist into town, and he does little more than just remind Amy that she needs to take care of herself first and remind Kevin that Amy is a great human being. I agree with both sentiments, and I wouldn't mind if Dr. Sloan could drop in and give me some life advice.
  • Amy confided in Nate that just before Kevin committed suicide, he called her, but she ignored his call. Amy still feels an incredible amount of guilt about that, and it gives some more context to her over-protectiveness.
  • Speaking of Nate, I asked last week for him to have more to do and my prayers were sort of answered. I like the dynamic he has with both Kevin and Amy, and he gave her some terrific advice while he was nursing those shin splints.
  • The good news is that we met another warrior of God, the overly bubbly Ava. The bad news is she's accepted defeat and is no longer concerned with fulfilling her mission. And the other 34 warriors feel the same way. I hope we get to meet more warriors! Yvette can't just let them just give up like that!
  • Reese continues spying on Kevin and gathering her notes. This week she catches him being saved from serious injury when he falls off the building where Deb and Ben are talking. Yvette pulls him in, but Reese can't see that so she just sees him suspended in air. She's going to be first to figure this out, right?

Alright, guys, we are three episodes in, and I want to know what you think is working and what's not.

Do you want to see more of the secondary characters? Were you excited to meet another warrior of God?

Kevin: Ah, I needed this. Planning a wedding for two good people? This is the reason I signed up for this job.
Yvette: You didn't sign up.

Amy: Who are those people?
Reese: Maybe it's flower therapy?
Amy: That's not a thing.
