Vikings will not be history any time soon at History.

The cable network has confirmed the series will return for a sixth season consisting of 20 episodes, and there's a pretty awesome twist to go along with the news.

Series lead, Katheryn Winnick (Lagertha) will take a step behind the camera to direct an episode from the freshly announced season, which kicks off production later this year in Ireland.

“It has been my pleasure and my privilege to work with History and our partner MGM over five seasons and 69 episodes of Vikings,” series creator Michael Hirst said in a statement.

“Now we are ready to begin production of a 20-episode Season 6 that will deliver a huge and unexpected revelation to our audience.”

History programming EVP Eli Lehrer said, “Vikings has evolved from early raids in England, to the heart-stopping death of Ragnar Lothbrok, to the fierce battles of the Great Heathen Army, and now we’ll see the sons of Ragnar exploring and conquering the known world. Michael Hirst has only scratched the surface of his epic saga.”

The exciting news comes 11 weeks before Vikings Season 5 is set to premiere on the network. That season will also span 20 episodes, so it's clear the cable network does not want to let the series go.

Ever since the series premiered in 2013, it has been one of the best shows around, and part of that is down to the crazy twists, the talented cast, and the stunning filming locations.

If you watch Vikings online, you will know that there was a lot of death during Vikings Season 4

Like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, the series does not waste any time in dispatching of the series regulars.

Over to you, Vikings Fanatics. What do you think of the early renewal?

Are you happy to know there are at least forty episodes left of the series?

How the little piggies will grunt when they hear how the old boar suffered.

Ragnar

Ragnar: What do you see?
Bjorn: Power, the power of a king.
Ragnar: Power is always dangerous. It attracts the worst and corrupts the best. I never asked for power. Power is only given to those who are prepared to lower themselves to pick it up.
