The 33-year-old was performing a stunt with actor Austin Amelio, who plays Dwight on the hit AMC drama series when disaster struck. The stunt was performed on a balcony.

Bernecker fell 30 feet from the balcony to a concrete floor, missing the safety pad and landing on his head.

There were initial reports saying the swelling on Bernecker's brain went down in the aftermath of the incident, but it was said to swell again afterward.

"Our production is heartbroken by the tragic loss of John Bernecker,” TWD showrunner Scott M. Gimple said in a statement on Friday.

“John’s work on The Walking Dead and dozens of other movies and shows will continue to entertain and excite audiences for generations."

"We are grateful for his contributions, and all of us send our condolences, love, and prayers to John’s family and friends.”

AMC president Charlie Collier flew in from Los Angeles to attend the set as production resumed on the series on Sunday.

The network confirmed the news of the death on Friday, saying:

“John Bernecker's family has decided that he will be removed from life support, following organ donation,” said the AMC statement.
