Riverdale Season 1 Episode 12 Review: Anatomy of a Murder

at .  Updated at . Comments

There you have it, Riverdale fans. We have our murderer.

This is the moment we've all been waiting for: Riverdale Season 1 Episode 12 revealed Jason's killer. It took one secret pregnancy, a house party, and an affair to get here. It was so worth it.

The Hunt For The Truth - Riverdale Season 1 Episode 12

Clifford Blossom killed his son Jason. Did anyone else see this coming? Was he on your Riverdale suspect list?

Don't get me wrong, I want to pat myself on the back because I was right about him (and FP AND Joaquin). But I'm going to stay humble since I only locked down on Clifford since Riverdale Season 1 Episode 11 and I was split between two theories. I just knew the Blossoms were shady in this murder.

Clifford killing his son because Jason ran away was despicable. It shows how much of a tyrant he must've been. There is no excuse for murder, regardless if Jason dishonored the family name.

Clifford: Cheryl, what is it?
Cheryl: You did a bad thing, Daddy. And now everyone knows.

Though, I'm still a bit confused about the definitive reasons. Jason also ran away because of the drug business, right? And Clifford killed him because Jason let him down?

The writers lightly touched upon this when Penelope teased the maple syrup and showing the drugs. I have a feeling this is one of those scenarios where it wasn't just one reason that led to Jason's death, it was everything. And that guilt led to Clifford killing himself.

How Will Hermione React? - Riverdale Season 1 Episode 12

Why do the parents on Riverdale continue to prove they're the worst? I shouldn't be shocked at this point.

Archie, Veronica AND Betty go to their parents for help with substantial evidence about FP and yet they do nothing. Sure, it could've implicated them, but it gave some doubts. And yet these teens were the ones who solved the case, not Sheriff Keller.

A fault I have with Riverdale may be the "Stupid Parent Syndrome". These teens clearly have their priorities together and they're the ones searching for answers, while the parents are naysayers or act like children.

Hopefully this is rectified in Riverdale Season 2.

Jughead: Cleaning the trailer, convincing me that you quit drinking...I was so happy for the first time in so long. You paid attention to me. Let's be honest, the only reason you even read my manuscript about Jason's murder was to make sure I wasn't onto you. You didn't want to take me to Toledo to get the family back together; you wanted to get away, you wanted to run away.
FP: I did what I had to do! WHAT I ALWAYS DO!
Jughead: Are you even sorry?
FP: I'm sorry I got caught. We done?
[Jughead walks away]
FP: Look at me Jughead! Never come back here! Understand?

FP Jones admitting to the crime to protect Jughead was honorable. He is a nice guy (and a caring father) in the end.

Skeet Ulrich and Cole Sprouse have great chemistry together. Every scene they're in together is so emotionally-charged; it could lead to tears. Their best yet is the jailhouse scene when FP tells Jughead to never come back.

My heart was breaking for them during this scene. It felt like a goodbye and an ending to their father-son relationship.

Burning Baggage - Riverdale Season 1 Episode 12

Though, let's take a minute to throw some shade at Jughead's mom for a second.

Her son calls in the middle of the night asking to stay with her, but yet she says no. She is so inconsiderate.

Jughead is 16 years old and technically living without a guardian. Why isn't she worried? Why doesn't she care? Why isn't she asking about his father?! If this is how she is, she can stay away in Toledo.

Wake up! - Riverdale Season 1 Episode 12

Hermione has been a bit inconsistent lately. Her character keeps bouncing back and forth between being a good parent and a survivalist.

She was quick to get the bags packed and documents ready to go if the Serpents implicated her. Hermione did not care one bit if Veronica could help exonerate someone else. With someone who's husband is behind bars, I'm a bit surprised with her reasoning.

However, we can all agree she'll protect Veronica. Regardless if Veronica has a say in it or not.

A Game Of Clue - Riverdale Season 1 Episode 12

Was everyone else shocked over the Blossom/Cooper family history? My jaw hit the floor.

Kudos to the writers for thinking of this great twist. It's so subtle and tiny, but it caused massive shockwaves when revealed. I never expected it.

Looking at the two families now, they're two sides of the same coin: the Blossoms are red and power-hungry while the Coopers are blue and the picture of perfection. It's no wonder these families are always entwined in drama and destruction. Now they can add incest to the list.

Polly: Wait, do you mean about great-grandpapi Cooper being murdered by a Blossom?
Hal: Betty, you're great-grandfather wasn't just murdered by a Blossom. He WAS a Blossom. After the murder, our family severed ties with the Blossoms and their name. We took a new one: Cooper.
Betty: I'm...a Blossom?!
Alice: Polly is a Blossom? Which makes her and Jason...relatives by blood. Which is why you wanted to...
Hal: Yeah. Alice, that's why.
Alice: Oh my God, Hal! If you were willing to send our daughter away to keep her away from Jason...
Betty: How far would the Blossoms go to keep them apart?
We need to get Polly out of that house.

Poor Cheryl. She went through an emotional pull on Riverdale Season 1 Episode 12. It's no wonder she hit Jughead in the cafeteria.

In the same week, she found her brother's killer (her dad), the truth about the family business, and saw her dad kill himself. This will no doubt cause some problems in the future. She may need to talk to someone.

However, it cannot be Penelope. After the scene with the maple syrup, Penelope is just as deranged as Clifford. I wouldn't be surprised if it's revealed she knew about it all.

Following A Lead - Riverdale Season 1 Episode 12

Did anyone else notice the San Junipero easter egg? It was brief and hidden, but it was there on the bus.

For those unfamiliar, this is a nod to Black Mirror Season 3 Episode 4 where two woman find love in a digital '80s world. It's, arguably, the most popular episode of Black Mirror. And it's one of my favorites!

I loved seeing this moment. Sure, it's sad that Joaquin and Kevin broke up, but seeing this easter egg made me smile. It's great when writers get a bit cheeky.

Betty: Put this on.
Archie: What?
Betty: Put it on.
[Archie puts on the jacket]
Archie: Betty, this is weird.
[Betty searches the jacket]
Betty: There's a hole in the pocket.
Kevin: Okay, now we're just grasping at straws.
Betty: Okay, no. I don't know about you guys, but whenever I have a hole in my jacket pocket, I always lose my chapstick in the lining.
Veronica: ...Or in my Monte-Blanc.
Betty: Hold on.
[She searches in the pocket and finds a USB]
Veronica: What the hell?
Kevin: Nancy Drew strikes again.

My favorite scene of the night may be the killer reveal sequence of events.

We haven't seen Betty bring out her Nancy Drew abilities since Riverdale Season 1 Episode 4. I loved that she was clever to check the jacket and put the pieces together to find the USB. She ultimately solved the case!

And the fact she called to warn Cheryl about her father shows how inherently good Betty is as a character. She didn't have to warn her, she just did it by instinct. Being frenemies didn't hold her back.

The Mother Of All Worry - Riverdale Season 1 Episode 12

"Chapter Twelve: Anatomy of a Murder" may be Riverdale's most meatiest episode yet. A lot of things happened that pushed all of the plots forward leading into the season finale. I enjoyed the hour; this was something complex and different from what we've seen.

We got plenty of exposition about how people committed crimes, why they did it, and how it was done. As a Riverdale fan, I enjoyed watching step-by-step how this event came to be and how everyone was involved. It wasn't simply words; we saw it all.

This was a fitting end to the mystery. It answered a lot of questions about Jason's death and culminated with a shocking reveal. This is a good example of when a murder mystery ends on a high note.

Though, we still have the Riverdale Season 1 finale coming up on Riverdale Season 1 Episode 13. The murder mystery may be over but there's still more to come. I can't wait to find out!

Cooper Concern - Riverdale Season 1 Episode 12
