Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 23 Review: True Colors

Holy fudge that was an explosive hour!

Yes, I know, that was an awful joke, but what can I say? I have a dark sense of humor, and joking helps me cope. After everything they threw at us on Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 23, coping is essential.

Kevin McKidd does such a good job directing, doesn't he?

Knock, Knock, Who's There?

This season of Grey's Anatomy has done the thing I absolutely abhor. It started off strong, devolved into something akin to a hot mess in the middle, and now it's coming in hot for the end of the season. Oops! I did it again. Anyway, we can all agree that Grey's Anatomy Season 13 has not been its best, and that has been disappointing.

So, now, we have this "Megan is alive" reveal. Most of us pretty much predicted she was alive a long time ago, and we have been impatiently waiting for them to get to the revelation since last season.

Just like we have been waiting for something about Jo's husband since last season. Seriously, we were waiting sooooo long. I was channeling Judge Judy. Get on with it, already!

Impatient Judge Judy

Naturally, Grey's Anatomy dumped both on us in the penultimate episode of the season despite not having consistent storylines leading up to either of them. Hours worth of hospital politics was more important, I guess.

Because we saw the Megan reveal coming for so long, it didn't hit the shocking mark, but it made up for it with the emotional impact. Can someone hold Owen? Kevin McKidd killed me. I am writing this from beyond the grave.

Owen: Two soldiers came to the house today. They said they found her. They said they found Megan.
Amelia: Owen, I'm so sorry. At least you know. Maybe you can find some peace.
Owen: They said that she's alive.

If there is ever a guy who deserves a happy ending with minimum angst, it is Owen. You know what I realized when he was walking around in shock? I realized that Owen doesn't have a person.

Who is Owen's person? Remember when Meredith assumed custody of him after Cristina left, and she took it upon herself to be his person?  At some point, she just stopped, and then started screwing the guy who he was against. Why hasn't Meredith checked back in with Owen?

She hasn't checked in with him since he and Amelia got married. I thought that was an interesting relationship, and I appreciated it for what it was. Owen used to get along well with Derek, but Derek is dead. Owen's best man was freaking April, but what even happened to the two of them?

Honestly? Who does Owen have? No one.

Distraught Owen

I know some of you may think Amelia, but when Amelia has been the source of his angst and hurt, well, fat lot of good that does. I am so happy that they picked up the friendships in the last few installments, and even gave us a few new ones, but this is what I was talking about when I said that the season lacked friendship.

Owen has been on an island all by his damn self with a wife who was acting like a gosh damn child all season, and no one to really talk to.

He's on more solid ground with Nathan, but when we weren't seeing glimmers of depth from Nathan with his friendly exchanges with Maggie, he's spent the majority of the season chasing after Meredith.

So the weight of his scenes meant so much more when you think about the fact that Owen doesn't/hasn't had anyone.

Omelia Comfort

He's still a veteran who suffers from PTSD. That doesn't just go away. He still has his demons. He still needs someone checking in with him. It's unfortunate that he ended up marrying someone with even more emotional baggage and requires more attention than he does.

The reveal should have happened ages ago. We already knew it was coming. The build up to it should have been better, but the payout when you watch Kevin McKidd emotionally slay us with those scenes, almost makes all of it worth it. Almost.

Owen: Ask for Teddy Altman.
Amelia: What?
Owen: Ask to talk to Dr. Altman.

Then, they broke my heart again because they mentioned Teddy. I miss her so much! His current wife got to speak with his former best friend, but he couldn't bring himself to. Apparently, Teddy had called, and he wouldn't answer the phone.

Teddy was one of the best things that Owen ever had, and it still makes me sad that their relationship was ruined. She would have been there for him throughout everything that he has endured over the years.

None of this was meant to be a bashing against Amelia. Amelia was actually great throughout this hour. She actually managed to be a good wife to Owen.

More importantly, after weeks to months of avoiding him, lashing out at him, verbally attacking and berating him, and flat out not speaking to him, she got her act together and called a truce and was there for him.

I got married right over there. Then I got divorced. Then I got married again. Then I went on my leave, and I left Megan in a hole in a ground for almost ten years. Weeks would go by, and I didn't give her a thought. I couldn't spare her a thought. She was being held and tortured. I stopped looking. I gave up. I gave up on her.

Owen

I want to be proud of Amelia. I am proud of her, but part of me feels like it's giving her praise for something she should have been doing a long time ago. I don't want to feel like I need to give Amelia a cookie for not being a selfish person. She should have been able to do that anyway.

I could understand Owen's denial. It's been years. The guilt is already eating him up, and he doesn't even know the whole story. Accepting that Megan is still alive means that he gave up on finding his sister, carried on with his life, and stopped thinking about her as much.

We all know that that's the most healthy thing that he could have done, but you just can't apply rationale to something as irrational and uncontrollable as feelings.

If I Lie Here

When he finally broke down to Amelia, it reminded me so very much of the conversation Nathan had with Maggie during Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 14.

Maggie couldn't understand why the parents wouldn't be happier, but Nathan knew that finding out that someone you thought was long gone, someone you had grieved and put to rest, was really alive makes you feel guilty for moving on.

All that time they were out there alive, while you were living your life. You can find that quote here

Now, Nathan has to find out. Of course, that was also what we predicted. Meredith had just gotten to the point where she felt comfortable enough to invite Nathan over.

Although I have to admit, it was annoying that she came to this realization after five minutes of Nathan being so good with Erin. That's not the first time he's been shown with a kid, Meredith. Such a contrived thing to squeeze in there.

Impressive - Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 23

Mer and Nathan are finally in a good place and this Megan reveal is here to blow up everything (I'm trying, guys. I can't help it).

We don't know all the details of Megan being missing for a decade, and I can't wait to find that out, but finding out that the love of his life is still alive can definitely set fire to the Merthan 'ship. Understandably so. I'm already shipping him with Megan. Sorry, Mer.

I don't think Meredith should be the one to tell Nathan the truth. I do think she should be there when he hears it, but it isn't her revelation to reveal. That's assuming she doesn't burn through the hospital floor or something when she heads back to the hospital to find Nathan.

Amelia: Derek is dead. Maggie is fine. There is nothing in your way but you. Let yourself have this.
Mer: Look at you being the sane one.
Amelia: Moments. I have moments.

I am letting you guys know right now, if Stephanie Edwards ends up dead, I am going to be pissed and inconsolable. That is not how I want Jerrika Hinton to exit the show. I'm still having heart palpitations from her entire experience with that rapist.

Stephanie Edwards doesn't deserve this! If she is dead or eventually dies, then she will have gone out like every bit the BAMF that she is. My pulse is racing. I'm so on edge right now.

Five seconds after the patients were brought in, it was pretty apparent what had probably gone down. With all the stuff they've seen in that hospital, I can't fault the other doctors for trying to paint a happy or funny picture about how a half-naked couple ended up in the hospital.

Alison: Is he dead? Did I kill him?
Miranda: Oh no,no, you didn't do anything.
Alison: Please, tell me I killed him.

Once again, I have to give a shout out to April. The third episode in a row she's amused me. I may actually have to stop saying that I dislike her now. Maggie had a couple of good quips, too. I'm also still loving her relationship with Jackson.

There is chemistry there; now whether you see it as sexual/romantic or friendly/familial is entirely up to you, but whatever the heck it is, I'm enjoying it. Although, why did Jackson think she was cynical? Sunshine and rainbows Maggie? Wait, nevermind, she was a tad more cynical back on Grey's Anatomy Season 11, so fair point.

Jackson felt so guilty about leaving Stephanie alone with that rapist, but it's not like he knew. His genuine concern for her gave me flashbacks to when the two of them were a couple. When he finds out what happened to her, he's going to be devastated.

Happy Mer - Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 23

I don't know about you guys, but I spent a little too much time yelling at the screen because it felt like Stephanie should have been able to get out and away from him. I had to keep reminding myself to not blame the victim when there was a dickwad holding a scalpel to her.

I was also flipping out when Ben didn't notice anything. How, Ben? How? You're supposed to be my guy.

As soon as Bailey called that Code Orange, I had an idea where the teasers and spoilers about the fire were coming in. The only way to get out of a lockdown like that is setting off the sprinklers.

I'm just really amped up and emotionally all over the place, and I'm super worried about my girl, Stephanie, but am I the only one who wanted to slap Erin's parents? Erin covered more ground at the hospital than an intern during their shift. How?

Cute Kid - Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 23

She needed one of those damn leashes or something. A normal hospital is not the place you want a young girl wandering around in, let along Grey Sloan Memorial, where she could have gotten mauled by a bear on her way to the vending machine or run over by a car while staring out of the window in the lobby.

Her parents were the worst. It was annoying enough that she popped up some of everywhere throughout the hour, but then she was the one to stumble across Stephanie and the rapist.

I knew any chance that Stephanie had of getting away from that dirtbag would be interfered with because her natural instinct would have been to keep the girl safe first.

I was so happy when it looked like Stephanie would have the upper hand and potentially stab the guy with the scalpel. Then I remembered that she either would have to set him on fire so that she and Erin could get out afterward.

Erin, my name is Stephanie. I want you to do me a favor okay, I want you to turn around and cover your eyes like hide n' seek okay?

Stephanie

When she told Erin to turn around, I knew she was going to set him on fire. I was all prepared to celebrate that bastard literally burning in hell, but then as if he had to do one last "screw you," the way pure evil individuals do, he rolled his ass right on over to the oxygen tanks, and I had to keep myself from covering my eyes.

I love it when my favorite characters play hero, but I hate it when it's pointless heroism. Stephanie is a badass, but she's not powerful enough to stop the hospital from exploding. Maybe her adrenaline just kicked in and she was in fight mode because she should have stayed behind the door.

You should have stayed behind the door, Stephanie! I'm so stressed out right now. I should have known she would have a terrible day when Eliza was bitching about her coming back even though she did go to therapy.

Stephanie Comforts Erin

Nearly everything else has plagued Seattle Grace West Grey Sloan Hospital/Memorial, it's actually a wonder they waited 13 seasons to have a full blown fire. Although, they did have an explosion before.

Now, there is the matter of the other big reveal we were waiting on. It sucks that Matthew Morrison graced our screen, and it was almost shoe-horned in because the other stuff happening was just much more pressing.

So many of you were right, Alex did track down Jo's husband, Mr. Schuester Paul. That's why Alex went to a medical conference. I wanted to like this so much more than I actually did.

Jo's Husband

I want to be happy that Alex had screen time because he's basically been lacking that since he avoided prison. It's just, there was no build up to this. I'm trying to think back to what, if anything, prompted him to call whomever it was he called to track this guy down.

Was it that Liam's mother felt compelled to go behind her husband's back to get their son help, and that made Alex think of Jo being abused? He and Jo haven't even had a conversation. What prompted this? Someone, help me!

It came out of nowhere. That seems to be the theme of the season, so I guess I should have expected that. I also hated that we were subjected to two or three scenarios of what Alex would do when he confronted him. I was not a fan of the "Psych, Gotcha!" thing they had going on there.

Mr. Grey - Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 23

Then, he finally did come face-to-face with Paul, and so far the douchiest thing he did was steal Alex's cab, but to his credit, he offered to share. Alex had nothing to say. Is that it? Probably not. Did we need that? Eh. I could have done without it.

So, Paul Statler is apparently a well-esteemed, handsome doctor who gives speeches on his groundbreaking medical research.

I hate that I want to know more about his and Jo's marriage. I am not saying that Jo isn't a battered woman, I've worked with too many of them to dismiss her story and her experiences. I do think there is more to this story though. It has to be, right?

Like I told you, the feeling doesn't last. I'm not trying to be cynical, it's just that even when a day starts out so, so well, that day can end so, so badly.

Meredith

At the rate they have gone with this season, they could have easily postponed introducing us to Jo's husband until next season because I wasn't impressed with how it happened here.

So, what did you think of think of this hour? Are you excited about the season finale? Is Stephanie dead? What will happen when Megan arrives at GSM? Will there even be a GSM left to come go to?

Hit up the comments below! Please, guys. I kind of need work out my feelings with fellow Grey's fanatics!

Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 23 Quotes

Is this about my sister, Megan?

Owen

There are moments when all the stars align -- when everything seems as it should be.You lie seems to have sorted itself out. It's not like all our problems go away. It's just that the problems are suddenly manageable and it seems like we conquer any problem. You feel so good you wonder if it's real. And if I've learned anything, I can tell you, it is. It's very real. But it will not last.
