Bull Season 1 Episode 19 Review: Bring It On

The death of a cheerleader led to a theatrical trial on Bull Season 1 Episode 19

Jules Caffrey was surprisingly easy to like. He was charming and handsome and he obviously loved his wife.

The man couldn’t even bring himself to talk about Lauren in the past tense and she’d been gone for three months.

Even Bull admitted that he believed Jules was innocent. It wasn’t the man that was questionable as much as his tactics.

Bull: You don't get my help by lying about hiring me.
Jules: Got you here, didn't it?
Bull: Yeah, well so would a text with a smiley face emoji. You pull that crap again and I'll be on Gail King saying how you did hire me but I quit because I couldn't believe how guilty I found you.

I suppose simply calling the TAC for an appointment would have been too easy. it certainly wouldn’t have given us a reason to see Jason Bull get testy.

Of course, Jules had his faults. He was driven and stubborn and thought he knew better than Bull…

Bull: Jules, I am not window dressing, I'm the damned window. You hired me, remember?
Jules: You bet I did, and image is everything, and you don't rep guilty men.
Bull: Listen to me, science is everything, and my team and I have spent every waking hour combing research and data to formulate this game plan.

But the real reason to dislike Jules Caffrey wasn't because he was headstrong or that he married women much younger than he was.

The most annoying thing about him was that he continually spoke about himself in the third person.

Bull: You really like to refer to yourself in the third person, don't you, Jules?
Jules: A lot of people do that.
Bull: The only ones who do it more than you are Donald Trump and Elmo.

Things got more interesting when Jules’ ex-wives took the stand.

It certainly wasn’t a good sign when all three of them called him a monster. It felt as though they had as much of a flair for the dramatic as their ex-husband.

But Lauren was the real mystery.

The cheerleading angle was fun, but I wish we had seen more of it.

Chunk Questions a Cheerleader - Bull Season 1 Episode 19

All of the men loved Lauren while the women hated her. It was almost hard to blame them considering that the only reason Lauren had her job was because she was marrying the boss.

Chunk: Angela Miles, finally made it up to captain with the squad at Bronx City, then lost it when Lauren came on board.
Bull: Got back on top when Lauren died.
Chunk: Doesn't quite seem enough to kill for.
Bull: Have you ever met a cheerleader?

But the mean cheerleader story went nowhere, even though Angela had pushed some girl off the stage back in high school, she didn’t kill Lauren.

Given the aggressiveness with which Lauren was killed, it seemed obvious that it must have been personal. The killer shoved her head into the tub with considerable force.

I found it a little far-fetched that a rich, successful defense attorney who was paying alimony to three ex-wives would marry a fourth time without doing a background check or a prenup.

There’s a difference between love being blind and just plain stupid.

That Lauren was really a grifter pulling a con was a twist I never saw coming, but the mystery brother being the killer felt a little too much of a stretch.

I suppose it’s plausible, it just wasn’t satisfying.

Danni and Cable - Bull Season 1 Episode 19

The B plot was Cable and her new romance with old boyfriend Wes who was buying her a few too many gifts. But Danny made a good point in this Bull quote

I just know that any guy with half a brain would not cheat on you.

Danny

Wes wasn’t cheating, per se, but he was going back on his promise not to let gaming monopolize his life.

Since he and Cable seem to be happy, perhaps he’s finding more of a balance now. Only time will tell.
