The Good Fight Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Not So Grand Jury

at .  Updated at .

There's a popular legal phrase, "A Grand Jury will indict a ham sandwich." It essentially means it doesn't take much to get a Grand Jury indictment.

This is true and also why the firm, Reddick, Boseman and Kolstad, is working so hard to avoid said indictment.

On The Good Fight Season 1 Episode 7, everyone is served with Grand Jury subpoenas: Barbara while at dinner; Adrian at a cooking class; Lucca at her apartment.

Luckily, Elsbeth is on her toes and finds a strategy fast.

While most attorneys try to keep race out of the courtroom, the firm wants to use it to their advantage. They decide to bring up their racial make up every chance they get as a way of making the department look racist.

This only causes Kresteva to change course; which in turn causes Elsbeth to do the same.

The two of them really bring out the best in each other. Even if Kresteva just gets more and more annoying.

Mike Kresteva: Mrs. Tascioni, you've bitten off way more than you can chew.
Elsbeth: Really? I can chew a lot.

Collin is asked to represent Kresteva in a tortuous interference suit filed by the firm. This is awkward since he's dating Lucca.Kresteva in a tortuous interference suit filed by the firm. This is awkward since he's dating Lucca.

Things get even more awkward when Lucca takes second chair, specifically to throw him off.

This is a classic Alicia Florrick move.

When Collin explains the issue to his boss he has a simple solution -- break up with her. I think we all know that's not going to happen.

The chemistry between them in court alone was evidence of that.

The writers are so quick to show how passionate they are about each other, but I liked their last scene when he showed up at her apartment and they just hugged.

After a long day of screaming at people for the sake of your career, sometimes, what you really need is a soft place to land.

Lucca provided just that.

While I enjoyed seeing them battle in court, I always want to see more Elsbeth. Unfortunately, Judge Gallo doesn't feel the same way.

Ma'm, you're an acquired taste, and I don't think I've acquired it yet.

But that doesn't stop Elsbeth. Similarly, and despite hitting roadblocks along the way, Kresteva also refuses to stop going after the firm.

He subpoenas Marisa; one of the firm's clients; and the financiers.

Adrian, Barbara and Diane do everything they can think of to keep up with him.

I was so bummed when they discovered that Diane may be the real target. Not only did she point Adrian in the direction of favorable evidence when she was opposing him but she was also part of the Rindell investment.

Not the scheme itself, but that's what Kresteva wants to make it look like.

I loved that Adrian stood by Diane and wouldn't let her resign. He's already become a great ally for her.

Maia Shocked - The Good Fight Season 1 Episode 7

Maia finally had some honest conversations with her dad.

So Henry's doing this to protect his daughter. Or so he says.

Do we believe him? Or is he really trying to save himself?

He already lied to Maia. He's turned on Diane. He's working with Kresteva.

There's not much to like about him right now and there's absolutely no reason to believe anything that comes out of his mouth.

Henry: I'm telling the truth.
Maia: Your alternative truth?

I guess he did a good thing by testifying to the plea deal during the civil suit. I mean that's really the least he could do.

I feel like he still has a lot of making up to do, though.

Maia's threatening to keep her kids from him seemed a bit much, and kind of out of left field since they've never even talked about kids, but I like that she stood up for Diane.

I was very surprised that Henry had screwed Diane over, not after the scheme became public to mitigate the damage against him, but early on, "just in case".

They're supposed to be such good friends; Diane is Maia's god mother. It makes me wonder if Henry is truly loyal to anyone?

Side notes:

  • Amy is alive and well! I'm glad we finally got a few glimpses of her.
  • Marisa is learning Italian because she's not awesome enough already.
  • Am I the only one that thinks Kresteva bugged Aida before returning the device to Esbeth?
  • There was no Julius in this episode. I guess that means he's officially moved on.
  • I definitely don't think Kresteva will go away. He'll just find another way to get at the firm. Elsbeth better be ready.

What do you guys think? Is Henry the mastermind behind the ponzi scheme?

Will Diane and/or Maia end up collateral damage?

What will Kresteva do next?
