Riverdale Round Table: Polly's Little Secret

at .

Betty and Jughead went on the hunt to find a missing Polly, Josie and Valerie got into a heated argument about the band, and Archie suffered from serious stage fright before a big audition on Riverdale Season 1 Episode 6

Below, TV Fanatics Mandy Treccia, Paul Dailly, and Justin Carreiro debate the actions of Riverdale's parents, the new romance brewing between Jughead and Betty, and the whereabouts of Polly Cooper.

1. Do Josie's parents put too much pressure on her to be a success?

Mandy: Yes. I felt terrible for her when her dad walked out of the performance. It's one thing to push your kids to strive for the best. But he's taking it to an extreme, confidence-shattering level.

Paul: Yes. Like Mandy, I felt bad for her. I get that they want her to be the best version of herself, but they seem to be forgetting that she's, like, 15 years old. She has a lot of mistakes to make before she becomes older.

Justin: I still can't believe her dad actually walked out during the show! He's a music snob, and her parents are clearly putting all their expectations on her to be a star. Their attitude could have a negative effect on her in the future.

2. Polly is pregnant with Jason's child. React!

Mandy: This is one of the least surprising twists ever. As soon as the grandmother mentioned the ring last week, pregnancy crossed my mind. But it still feels weird in this day and age for the parents to be so over-the-top to lock her up over it.

Paul: For some reason, I thought we had already been let in on that little nugget of information. It was pretty predictable, but it just shows how embarrassed her parents were of her.

Justin: I called it! I knew there had to have been a reason why they wanted no one to see her. I just don't understand all the secrecy. They didn't need to hide her.

3. Will forging Veronica's signature come back to haunt Hermione Lodge?

Mandy: I think Veronica will make her pay. There's obviously a complicated dynamic to the Lodge marriage. Veronica doesn't have all the details, and that's what's going to cost Hermione. Veronica's going to do what she thinks is best.

Paul: I found that whole plot bizarre. Hermione knows how stubborn her daughter can be, so if she was going to sign it herself if Veronica said no, why did she even let her in on the secret in the first place? All she really seemed to do was make her strained relationship with her daughter worse. It's definitely going to bite her.

Justin: Hermione made a reckless move and it will cost her. Veronica knows her mother is willing to do anything for her relationship. However, I think Veronica's father will be the one to use this bit of information against his wife.

4. Jughead and Betty shared their first kiss. Did this romance surprise you? Are you shipping them?

Mandy: I'm disappointed. There was no buildup to it. Betty and Jughead have shared a lot of scenes, but they didn't drop any hints a romance might happen. Betty barely reacted to the kiss because she was thinking about her sister. I prefer slow burn romances.

Paul: I had no idea they were going in this direction with the storyline, but I don't mind it. Do we really expect Betty to be pursuing Archie into her 60s? She now knows her relationship with Archie is only ever going to be platonic.

Jughead has been there for Betty when she really needed it and they have a lot in common. I want this relationship to become a thing to see how Alice Cooper reacts. I laughed out loud when she kept saying "Jughead."

Justin: I saw this romance as a possibility, but I don't think they'll last. They're caught up in the moment and the closeness of doing this investigation together. I prefer them as friends. However, I do hope this leads Jughead to start discovering stuff about himself and ends up with the story that's canon in the Archie Comics.

5. Why do you think Mr. and Mrs. Cooper were so focused on keeping Polly and Betty apart?

Mandy: Even though they're both shady, I still think they might be doing it for the right reason. I do think Polly has problems. I keep going back to her name being in the playbook. That doesn't scream true love to me. I'm curious where this story goes. If Betty's parents did kill Jason, I'll be disappointed.

Paul: Everyone has a secret on this show, but I think Mr. and Mrs. Cooper are villains. Polly has problems, but I don't think she has enough to be put in an asylum and kept apart from her sister. The sisters have a strong bond and I dare say Betty would have been able to pull Polly back down to reality if something did go wrong.

Any way you look at it, the parents are dumb. As if Betty was not going to hit up "Sleuthster" (the faux search engine she and Jughead used was hilarious!) and find the truth.

Justin: I think it's due to a mix of embarrassment and fear. They didn't want people to know about the baby and let out that secret. However, Polly could actually have serious issues. The baby could've been a discovery after-the-fact when they planned to have Polly committed regardless...

6. Where do you think Polly is heading after the breakout?

Mandy: She probably wants answers. Betty didn't tell her much before they got pulled apart. Maybe she'll go see Jason's grandmother. They seemed to be close.

Paul: I'm with Mandy here. She'll hit up that scary mansion and strike up some sort of friendship with Cheryl because Polly is, like, carrying the last reminder of Jason.

Justin: I think she will be going to Jason's grave. She has to see it for herself that Jason is truly dead and buried. All she's heard so far is hearsay and information, but seeing the grave will make everything real to her.

Riverdale Season 1 Episode 6 Quotes

Josie: Mom, Valerie quit the Pussycats.
Mayor McCoy: Replace her!
Josie: Val writes our songs. She's irreplaceable.
Mayor McCoy: No, Josie, you're irreplaceable. Everyone else is...disposable. You know...maybe it's not such a bad thing to try a new voice? A different sound? You know how your father feels about pop music.
Josie: But it's not pop music this time.
Mayor McCoy: Well, he's catching a Red Eye and missing two concert dates to see you in this Variety Show. I would hate for you to let him down.
Josie: I understand, and I won't.
Mayor McCoy: Good. Because if you do, he will somehow blame me.

Veronica: Not to be "that girl", Archie, but I didn't get the memo we were adding another voice to the mix.
Archie: Hey, Ronnie, great news! Valerie quit the Pussycats.
Veronica: So that makes me...what then...backup?
Archie: No, I mean, you were just doing this as a favor to me, right?
Veronica: You're unbelievable, Archie. You literally have zero loyalty. You, Ginger Judas!
