Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 Episode 4 Review: DUI

at .

Looks like Ash and Pablo dropped the Baal. See what I did there?

Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 Episode 4 was yet another solid episode. It actually felt more like a season finale didn't it? Especially with the cliffhanger ending of Baal breaking out of hell.

Of course we know that's not the case, since there are still another six episodes of Deadite slashing mayhem to go in season two.

Ashy Slashy arrives - Ash vs Evil Dead

I couldn't help but feel for Ash as he attempted to put his father back together again like some gruesome Humpty Dumpty. Sure, Brock being killed was a shock, but at the very least Ash was able to get some acceptance and closure with his father before his demise.

Well pop, I guess it's time to ride the pale horse, up to the discount hardware store in the sky.

It wasn't long before the Delta came back for Ash, with a hapless Lacey still trapped inside. Then Pablo had to go be a hero trying to save Lacey and all it got him was a crash course in...well, crashing.

While trapped in the Delta, the Necronomicon had a few choice words for Pablo, and told him that they are both intertwined. This we already knew, but it was the first time the Pablo and the book had interacted since Ash vs Evil Dead Season 1 Episode 10.

When the Delta crashed, I had an inkling that it was just another vision. Then it was revealed Pablo had that huge freaking metal post through his chest cavity. That's when I knew this whole scenario was another premonition.

I find it hard to believe that the writers would kill off Pablo, but the possibility of it still makes me nervous when these scenes show up.

Ash and Chet's joyride was awesome. I'm glad Chet stuck around for more than one episode, because Raimi and Campbell are an absolute joy to watch together. It was humorous watching Chet question Ash about his weapons in the back seat.

Chet: Dude, there's a chainsaw in my back seat.
Ash: Yeah, that's mine.
Chet: What's it for?
Ash: Um...Ice sculpture.
Chet: Oh...and the shotgun?
Ash: That's mine too.
Chet: What's THAT for?
Ash: In case they don't pay for the ice sculpture.

These two are like watching two old former frat boys trying to return their former glory. With the way things left off between them, it makes me unsure if we will be seeing Chet again this season.

Chet was so receptive and excited when Ash revealed to him all about the Deadites and the Necronomicon. I was hoping Ash would have let him tag along, but appreciated that Ash didn't want to drag anyone else into his mess. I'm still hopeful however, that we'll be seeing more of Chet down the road.

Kelly and Ruby ransacking Ash's hidden armory was a good scene because it helped push across the formidability of Baal. It also showed that Kelly still doesn't trust Ruby completely. Why should she?

Kelly and Ruby - Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 Episode 4

I still don't have much faith in her myself. She has proven to be an invaluable asset to the team, but I can't shake the feeling that she still has an ulterior motive.

We have heard so little about Baal up until this point, and that mystery has made him all the more intriguing. Ruby has been dropping bits of information here and there for us to snack on, but I think Baal is going to be the most powerful threat Ash and the gang have encountered yet.

What we do know is that he will be played by Joel Tobeck from Son's of Anarchy. Who also coincidentally worked with Lucy Lawless on Xena: Warrior Princess.

Ash's showdown in the demolition derby with the Delta was thrilling. He was able to free Pablo and Lacey, before finally putting the Oldsmobile out of its misery. That poor thing has been through more in the last two days than in the last 30 years!

In regards to the Necronimicon talking Pablo into sending it to hell, I can't say I blame Pablo for doing what he thought was the right thing. Yet, how can you trust the words from a book that has caused nothing but death and destruction? Pablo was willing to do anything to sever his ties with the Necronomicon, and while it appears he has done so, Pablo may wish he hadn't.

The ramifications of that decision could make his premonition issue seem like small potatoes.

At the end of the episode, Baal busted out of hell, and he will for sure be looking to wreak some havoc. Sounds to me like he may have a personal vendetta with Ruby. The team will likely need each other now more than ever.

Other notes from the episode:

  • Ruby seems to think she killed the last of her spawn, but how does she know for sure? Could she likely have a psychic link to them?
  • Have we finally bid farewell to the Delta or will Ash whip his baby back into shape?
  • What happened to Lacey? We saw her escape the car, but that was the last we saw of her.
  • Do you think Pablo sending the Necronomicon to hell has truly severed his ties to it?
