Bones Season 11 Episode 21 Review: The Jewel in the Crown

Aubrey was able to live out his dream as he and the team tried to catch a jewel thief on Bones Season 11 Episode 21

The theme made for a fun hour of movie references including everything from Brennan being oblivious to Hodgins’ Pink Panther impersonations to Booth telling Aubrey he’s nothing like Cary Grant from To Catch a Thief. Ouch!

The Gentleman Thieves turned out to be a lady and one gentleman thief who was a two-time murderer.

Can you be a gentleman and a murderer at the same time?

I didn’t think that Chadwick Grey and Henri had the exact same build, especially since Henri was played by Gilles Marini, but I suppose that since I have no personal, hands on experience,  I’ll have to take their word on that.

I was afraid that Inspector Rousseau was going to be nothing more than a caricature but in the capable hands of Sebastian Roché, he managed to come across as competent and even sympathetic despite the fact that Henri wasn’t the killer he thought he was.

Two of my favorite scenes were when Cam realized that there should have been blood on the glass jewel case but there wasn’t, and then when Brennan told Hodgins to swab the inside of the dagger sheath for blood.

Why were they my favorites? Because I had the exact same thoughts about 30 seconds before the characters voiced them and it made me feel like I was putting the puzzle pieces together in the right order. Piecing together the clues of a mystery is half the fun of watching crime procedurals.

The other half is the characters and there were some pretty great character moments in this installment as well.

First, there was Hodgins’ tough new physical therapist…

Angela: By old physical therapist you mean the hot 26-year-old?
Hodgins: Wait, was she hot? I didn't notice.
Angela: That's why you were always showing her how strong your core was getting?

I should have expected the change would be a catalyst for Hodgins making progress with his paralysis but I was enjoying the banter between Angela and Hodgins so much that I didn’t think about where this story arc was headed.

And the constant falling objects were a mystery.

I didn’t think Hodgins’ theory about a fault line was correct because someone would have felt the small tremors and more than one object at a time would have been moved. And although I don’t believe in ghosts, I was intrigued by Daisy's poltergeist theory and I sort of agreed with her Bones quote to Hodgins…

I would have thought that someone who's convinced that alien beings built Stonehenge would be a little more open to the paranormal.

Daisy

I’m a little surprised that no one noticed Hodgins’ muscle spasms, but they could be small movements and his legs were generally hidden under tables and out of view.

I have mixed feelings about about Hodgins getting the use of his legs back. This has been a compelling story arc and I think there’s more story to be played out here, but with the series headed towards its final season next year, I suppose everything will have to get wrapped up sooner rather than later; this seems to be the beginning of the end of Hodgins and his wheelchair.

Elsewhere, Booth began to have issues with his vision and I enjoyed Brennan’s reaction to his distress more than anything, especially when Booth wanted to prove he could see fine (even though he obviously couldn’t) by insisting on driving the car.

As a mother, I found myself practically mimicking Brennan’s response…

Brennan

The second great line came later when she easily figured out that Booth had gone to see the eye doctor but was hiding it from her…

I don't need to hear him tell me that I was right. It's enough to know that he knows that I was right.

Brennan

Booth and Brennan have turned into a married couple I can really relate to and that makes the show all the more entertaining.

Of course, a few more romance or sex scenes couldn’t hurt…

But I digress…

And as much as I wasn’t thrilled with the pair of glasses that Booth was wearing, I’m in agreement with Brennan that a man in glasses can be very sexy. Maybe these two should go shopping and pick out just the right pair. Maybe then I’ll get those scenes for which I’ve been hoping.

Check back on Monday to see if our Bones round table team agrees with me about men in glasses and don’t forget to wander back next Thursday for my review of Bones Season 11 Episode 22, the season finale!
