Killjoys Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Kiss Kiss, Bye Bye

at .  Updated at .

Yup, Killjoys Season 1 Episode 7 was easily the most emotional hour of the show so far.

When everyone was gathered around Johnny's bedside, I was surprised to find my eyes watering up. I'm not much of a softie mind you, but it just goes to show how deeply I've connected with these characters. I hope more folks discover this series because it's truly something special.

Most fans were dreading the Dutch/D'avin hookup and what it would mean for the team. However, I must say it doesn't seem the writers are taking a predictable turn with that arc.

Let's give them a shot to see what they come up with, shall we?

I know folks are anxious to learn Johnny's backstory and understand the complaints it's always about D'avin or Dutch. However, I feel like John is very much the heart of the team. He's the glue that keeps it all together. That's a massively important role to play, and Aaron Ashmore handles it brilliantly. While I love all three leads, I confess I've developed a kind of soft spot for Johnny. Plus, he's a geek after my own heart.

Messing with Khlyen's neural link probably wasn't the best idea, especially since it gave Dutch and D'avin a chance to flirt while chasing that silver Snitch. Still, I love that John took the risk later stating, "In my defense, in scientific research there's a very thin line between stupid and genius."

John's little goof gave us (and D'av) a chance to see Pawter again. Too bad big bro had been pulling a fade on her.

Pawter: I'll give you Grayson's location. I hope your team can use him to find Jaeger.
D'avin: Where is he?
Pawter: Somewhere I sincerely hope you don't end up.

It was cool that the Killjoys had to jump through a few hoops before locating Jaeger. That gave us a chance to meet interesting characters like Grayson, Dr. Bliss and Carleen. Not to mention having to break Grayson out of a Westerly loony bin and going undercover at Utopia. All very different setpieces that helped flesh out the world.

I loved the almost Borg-like ship and continue to be impressed by Mr. X's visual effects work on the series. The minute Grayson shoved off to locate Dr. Bliss and Johnny met Carleen about the neural link, I knew Dutch and D'av would have their moment. That's twice this episode that the universe brought them together.

Let's be honest, it's easy to bitch about love triangles being predictable, but don't ridiculously hot people do stupid shit in the heat of the moment all the time? While Johnny chose to friend-zone himself for the good of the team, it was inevitable Dutch and D'avin would hook up. Wasn't it great when Pree brought it up at the bar?

Carleen informed us Khlyen's neural link was a new kind of biotech hybrid. "Living technology" she called it. Apparently, the device was a long way from home. That begs the question, where is Khlyen from, and when will we learn more about these world's outside the Quad?

Grayson's doctor turned out to be Jaeger's former assistant. I didn't see that one coming, did you?

Dr. Bliss: I was her assistant when the company first brought he over to the Quad.
Dutch: Not a good fit?
Dr. Bliss: Well, she had no vision. She was a total corporate whore. I told her there's a huge consumer need for this type of service. We could've cornered the market, but oh no she wanted to dance with the ones that brought her.
D'avin: So she stayed with the company and you stole her technique?
Dr. Bliss: No, I improved it. Jaeger just removed memories; I implant them.

It was funny that after everything they went through to locate Jaeger, it was Delle Seyah Kendry who made their visit to the "Black Site" possible. Of course, now Dutch owes her a future favor. She did her research too, even learning the name Yalena. Are you as worried as I am about what this "future favor" will turn out to be? It can't be anything good, that's for sure.

Anyway, D'avin finally came face to face with the elusive Dr. Jaeger. It was fantastic to see sci-fi queen Amanda Tapping playing such a significant role on the series. She was perfectly cast, wasn't she? Though Jaeger tried to play it off like D'av had a psychotic break, it was fairly obvious she was lying. I thought the fact Jaeger triggered D'avin was a nice twist. It never occurred to me she might be the baddie.

Fortunately before she flipped that switch, Dutch and D'avin managed to squeeze in a little sexy time. Can you imagine if it had kicked in mid-coitus? Man, it was heartbreaking watching Johnny walk in on them. The fight scene was unbelievably brutal. I got the impression either Hannah or Luke sustained some injuries filming that. They went all out, not holding back at all.

Naturally, Dutch went back to Jaeger, and poor Johnny got himself stabbed... Ouch!

Dr. Jaeger: Perfection is a process. Our mandate was to turn soldiers against there own forces and I assure you we succeeded. If it makes you feel any better, it was only meant to be a proof of concept demonstration; no casualties.
Dutch: Yeah, what went wrong?
Dr. Jaeger: We underestimated your friend's determination to kill. Cost me my job. Your soldier friend almost tracked me down once before on our home world. My deal with The Company included placing a kill warrant on him in case he followed me to the Quad.
Dutch: That was you.
Dr. Jaeger: And now they've let me hang out to dry.

Okay so correct me if I'm mistake; The Company was behind the psycho-soldier program until it failed. Then they simply backed off and left Jaeger to her own devices. According to her explanation, D'avin was partly responsible for killing his squad. Doesn't that make his unpredictability and being a Killjoy a dangerous combo? Jaeger's work was destroyed and her mind wiped. Have we seen the last of D'avin's memory issues?

When Johnny collapsed and Lucy said, "I don't know what to do," you could hear the distress in her voice. Luckily, Pawter arrived pretty quickly and saved his life. As I mentioned at the top, the hospital sequence got to me, though I knew John would be fine. And Dutch hugging Pawter, ah the feels! I'm fully invested in this world and its characters at this point. If we don't get a second season I'll be devastated. Make it happen Syfy/Space... please #RenewKilljoys

Though none of this was D'av's fault, I'm glad Dutch was not okay with what went down. Outstanding performances by Luke and Hannah in those closing moments by the way. It's going to take some time to fix what's broken, and I'm thankful this didn't turn into a predictable love triangle. The team will get past this, and I can't wait to find out how.

What did you think of "Kiss Kiss, Bye Bye"? Did you expect Jaeger to be so ruthless? How do you feel about Dutch and D'av's relationship now? Did Johnny almost dying bring you to tears? You're up guys, go ahead and share your thoughts in the comments below.

NOTE: Killjoys Season 1 Episode 8 is titled “Come the Rain” and airs on Friday, August 7.
