Wayward Pines Season 1 Episode 2 Review: Don't Discuss Your Life Before

at .  Updated at .

The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club.

In Wayward Pines Season 1 Episode 2, we learned the rules of survival in this creepy town. Don't try to leave, don't talk about the past, and answer the phone.

That third one seemed pretty odd at first, but by the end it made sense.

There are still a lot of questions to be answered, but I'm finding I'm not really in a hurry to get them. This is a well done mystery with fantastic acting. I'm happy to be along for the ride.

The timing is still the biggest mystery. We already knew that Beverly thought it was only 2000, but now we also know she hasn't aged in the time she's been there. She was born in 1960, and as Ethan said, she's looking pretty good for 54.

Kate is another mystery for me. At first I saw her as a possible ally for Ethan, especially when she hinted to him about Bill's wife.

But then she turned on them at the end. Is she jealous of Beverly? Was she protecting herself in front of her husband? Maybe if he hadn't been there she would have helped them instead of turned them in. What's your read on her?

Sheriff Pope really loves his ice cream, doesn't he? I wonder if that's supposed to be a symbol of some kind or just part of the character. He tells Ethan to stay in the motel, but I get the feeling he doesn't really want that. He basically shoved him out the door and into the morgue by telling him the body was there. Did he want him to find the map? I find it hard to believe a cop wouldn't have searched the victim's clothes, but this is no ordinary officer.

Theresa and Ben are finding a way to incorporate themselves into the story. Will they make it to Wayward Pines? What will happen if they do?

Nurse Pam didn't have much screen time, sadly. She's awesome, and I hope they find ways to keep her involved. There probably aren't a whole lot of reasons for Ethan to keep going to the hospital, but showing her at the bar means maybe we'll see more of her outside of that setting.

Let's talk about the ending. Kate and her husband got the phone tree going, and in minutes the entire town turned into a lynch mob. We've seen what happens if you try to leave or talk about the past, but what if you don't answer the phone? Death seems like a pretty harsh punishment because you happened to be in the bathroom. I'd be afraid to pee in this town.

Juliette Lewis is in all ten episodes, so Beverly can't really be dead, right? Is Ethan hallucinating? Is she only going to be in flashbacks or visions from now on? What are your theories?

Other notes:

  • All the money in this town is apparently fake.
  • Ethan caught receptionist Marcy in a lie and now knows that Hassler is not getting his messages. He's probably figured out his family isn't either.

Don't forget, you can watch Wayward Pines online any time!
