Marry Me Season 1 Episode 8 Review: Stand by Me

at .  Updated at .

Codependency is never a good thing, especially when between two grown platonic male friends.

Jake and Gil's relationship was explored this week on Marry Me Season 1 Episode 8.

With the focus put on Jake and Gil, the episode highlighted what works and doesn't work so far on the show. Unfortunately, there was more bad than good.

I don't want to sound like a broken record week after week, but the character of Gil is such a drag and holds this show back from realizing its full potential. How many episodes in a row can they talk about how sad and pathetic Gil is? It's exhausting.

Gil is beyond dependent on Jake. He needs him for everything. Who was Gil before his divorce? What kind of woman even married him in the first place?

It turned out that Gil was able to take care of himself, but that didn't sit well with the group, so things went back to normal by the end of the episode.

Kay: When you guys [Annie and Jake] get married and have kids in a couple years, who knows who Gil will turn to for help. Some scam artist?
Annie: A child predator?
Dennah: A full grown predator?

Everyone seems to keep Gil around because it's what they're comfortable with, and not because they genuinely enjoy his company. If anything, the plot of keeping Jake and Gil apart made me take a closer look at the group as a whole. How did these people come together? I feel like they would not actually be friends in the real world.

The writers keep forcing Gil into the spotlight, and it doesn't serve the show well.

On the plus side, we got to learn more about Kay and her past relationships. Her ex my have been crazy, but that didn't stop Kay from going back for some action.

Dennah: Hey where you been girl?
Kay: Well, you left me alone with Linda the butcher, so I went home with 4 pounds of top sirloin and 110 pounds of sexual fury.

I enjoy Kay's character far more than Gil. I wish the writers would put Gil on the back burner for a while and focus on her. I'd even take Dennah over Gil at this point. There's still more to explore with her.

Jake got some funny moments in the episode including the brunch and yoga scenes. Jake is the straight man most of time so it was good to see him act a little weird (or weirder than his normal weird). Still, I would have rather seen him have a storyline with Annie over Gil. He seems to love Gil, but I'm not entirely sure why.

Jake, I think you're taking this whole thing with Gil way too hard. You know he'll come back around. I've seen the way he looks at you.

Even though I'm tired of Gil, I'd like to seem some flashbacks highlighting how they all became friends. Maybe Gil was a different person before his marriage. Sadly, the man he is now is not someone I care to watch.

This was definitely the weakest episode of the show with the negatives far outweighing the positives.

So over to you guys. What did you think of the episode? Are you for or against Gil? Should we focus more on Kay and Dennah instead? Sound off below, and don't forget you can catch up on all the episodes when you watch Marry Me online
