Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 5 Review: Breaking Glass

A look into Emma's past gave her a glimpse into the mystery of the Snow Queen on Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 5

There was little doubt that Lilly wasn't telling Emma the whole truth when they first met but it was equally obvious that she was looking for a friend. It was something that Emma wouldn't completely understand until years later as she fought to mend fences with Regina.

As the hunt for the Snow Queen continued, Emma and Regina became reluctant partners. Well, reluctant on Regina's part. Emma was looking for any way she could to earn Regina's forgiveness, including helping to thaw out Marian...

Emma

It's always fun to see Emma and Regina pulling their powers to battle evil. This time it was another snow monster but even with their victory, Regina still wanted nothing to do with Ms. Swan. Thankfully Emma had Elsa there to encourage her to keep fighting.

The look on Regina's face when Emma explained that she considered Regina a friend was almost heartbreaking but the truth is, Regina hasn't really had any friends, at least not that we've seen. And Emma was right, she and Regina both know what it's like to feel rejected and misunderstood.

Elsa finally overcame her fear but if anyone should have found theirs it is Sidney. Betraying Regina can't be good for his longevity in Storybrooke. He'll be lucky if all she does is throw him back in a cell.

Althought Emma and Hook were separated for most of the episode, I loved how he was there for her at the end. She'd obviously had a difficult day and he immediately keyed into that. Plus his enthusiam to learn more about her past was sweet.

The twist of seeing the Snow Queen on the video footage caught me by surprise. How exactly does Emma fit into her plan to make her family love her again? More importantly, who is her family? Is it Elsa as she claimed or is there more to this story?

Mary Margaret's reluctance to leave her baby seemed over the top until she explained it in this Once Upon a Time quote...

Between the curse and the Wicked Witch, we don't exactly have the best track record with our babies.

Mary Margaret

Suddenly, her feelings made a lot more sense. And do you really plan a hike for a first date out without the baby? It's not exactly the most romantic idea.

I was happy that Mary Margaret accidentally pardoned Will. There's little use for him locked up in a jail cell and I look forward to seeing him interact with more of the residents of Storybrooke.

So what did you think of Emma's back story and why was the Snow Queen a part of her past?
